We do that because Jesus said "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you."
But we do it "sacramentally." That means it is really the body and blood of Jesus but under what seems to be bread and wine.
All Christians to not believe communion is really the body and blood of Jesus but only Catholics, Orthodox, Episcopalians and most Lutherans. The others consider it only a symbol.

This is a left-over (no pun intended) from a practice stolen by early Christians, from the Dionysus cult. Don't think that all Christian rituals are original. There was a lot of re-tread activity introduced to sway non-believers into the Christian faith and way of living.

Interesting answer to a similar question posted by "YHWY" yesterday. I tried to verify this answer and most of it cheched out:

"However the most amazing similarities exist with the Dionysius mystery cult. Dionysius was born on 25th December. He is portayed as a young bearded man. His followers ate a symbolic meal of bread and wine and he died by being suspended on a tree or wooden frame at the vernal equinox (Easter). Paul of Tarsus who invented a lot of the Jesus mythology travelled through many centres were this mystery cult was very strong and obviously copied some of them for the Jesus mystery cult. "

Catholics do this...they truly believe they are eating and drinking Christ. This is cannibalism. The rest of us who are NOT Catholics...believe this is merely a picture, as was the Last Supper (keeping in mind Jesus WAS at the Last Supper IN PERSON)..and the disciples didn't cannibalize Him.

I wonder, if someone put arsenic in the wafer mix...would the priest eat it and give it to the people??? ;) Supposadly they believe that they can turn the wafer to flesh and the wine to blood.... Just a curiosity..

You mean Catholics, which are a kind of Christian. All Catholics are Christian but not all Christians are Catholic.

We eat Jesus' flesh and drink His blood because He told us to. It's a gateway to the Kingdom of Heaven.

First, to clarify, chrisitians do not eat Jesus's flesh and drink his blood. It is just a symbolism. This process is called the holy communion. the holy communion is taken to commemorate Christ's death for us. before christians take the holy communion, they have to confess of their sins and ask for God's forgiveness. taking the bread and wine which represents the body and blood of Christ that has been broken for us goes to signify that we are a body of Christ.

God bless.

Before Jesus died, he had a last supper with his disciples. He told them to eat the bread and drink from the cup in remembrance of him. We continue to do this today. The bread is a symbol of the body of Christ, broken for us. The wine is a symbol of the blood of Christ, poured out for us. We do this to remember his sacrifice.

Jesus gave his flesh and blood as sacrifice for their sins (so that they'd be cleanse) they eat a REPRESENTATION of said flesh and blood to show that they accept his sacrifice.

If you really care you will take the time to read a Bible. Something tells me that you don't really care. You're just one of those that like to stir up trouble.
