Wafer saws and polishers to make the silicon substrate.
Photo resist spin-coater machines to apply photoresist.
Stepper and scanner aligners to expose the microscopic - sub micron lithographic circuit pattern.
Chemical and plasma etchers to etch away the required areas of the circuits.
Chemical Vapor Deposit machines to apply film coatings of metals and silicon dioxide.
Bake ovens and photostabilizers to harden the photo resist prior to etch.
Developers to develop the photo lithographic pattern.
Wafer saws to separate the individual die from the wafer.
Wire bonders to attach wires to the bond pads.
Not to mention numerous microscopes, clean room equipment, film thickness measuring devices, among many many small pieces of equipment needed to fabricate a VLSI chip. Don't forget the die level circuit tester to verify the circuit before encapsulation.

Very Large Scale Intregration or VLSI uses a photographic process to make the parts. I'm not real familiar with the equipment or the process but the parts are basically layers of photographs. This is probably over simplification. There is more to it than that. There must be a separate process for attaching to connector pins and another process for the encasement.
