Hey Mark, have you seen or read the left behind films? In the books, they show these kind of subjects as true creatures, not symbolic. They are not allowed to eat plant life but they are allowed to hurt humans. They will sting like scorpions, but will be like locusts in character, swarming in mutitudes and the sting will leave men suffering and wishing for death...but death will not come. I am thinking the description of them as horses and having women's hair and the breastplates might be symbolic of their strength and ability to survive any attempts humans make to get rid of them? In any case, their "king" is the angel of the abyss and in Hebrew, his name means "destroyer." All the folks who do not have the seal of God on their forehead are to suffer with their sting. This should be enough to get anyone into God's good graces!

This is Satan's locust army which will swarm once Satan is booted out of heaven.

The symbolism is as a scorpion. A scorpion will sting his prey then grab hold with his pincher's. The scorpion then injects it's digestive fluids into the victim. The victim becoming the scorpions stomach turning the backbone and everything to mush.

This is how many will be deceived having no willpower or backbone to overcome.

Difficult question. That book is SOOO steeped in symbolism.

Possible answer. The best explanation I've heard is possibly war helicopters.

Rev 9
9:7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.

9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.

9:10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months

Now then, the idea is that when the book was written, it was revealed in a vision. Even shown a direct view, it wouldn't make much sense to someone fromm that era of, say, an Apache attack copter. If you think about the shape, it looks similar to a scorpion, and the sound it makes sounds like "sound of chariots of many horses running to battle".

So one possible idea is a description of an attack copter.

They are true Christians.
Revelation 9:3: " And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power."
Revelation 9:5: "And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man."
Revelation 9:10: " And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
Notice that this plague is not directed first against the people or prominent ones among them—the ‘vegetation and trees of the earth.’ (Compare Revelation 8:7.) The locusts are to harm only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads, those in Christendom who claim to be sealed but whose record belies that claim. (Ephesians 1:13, 14) Thus, the tormenting utterances of these modern-day locusts were directed first against the religious leaders of Christendom. How these self-assuming men must have been tormented at hearing it publicly announced that not only were they failing to lead their flocks to heaven but they themselves would not get there! Truly, it has been a case of ‘the blind leading the blind’!—Matthew 15:14. The torment lasts for five months. Is that a relatively short time? Not from the point of view of a literal locust. Five months describes the normal life span of one of these insects. Therefore, it is for as long as they live that the modern-day locusts keep stinging God’s enemies. Moreover, the torment is so severe that men seek to die. True, we have no record that any of those who were stung by the locusts actually tried to kill themselves. But the expression helps us to picture the intensity of the torment—as though by the relentless assault of scorpions. It is like the suffering foreseen by Jeremiah for those unfaithful Israelites who would be scattered by the Babylonian conquerors and for whom death would be preferable to life.—Jeremiah 8:3; see also Ecclesiastes 4:2, 3.
Why is it granted to torment these ones, in a spiritual sense, and not to kill them? This is an initial woe in the exposing of the lies of Christendom and her failures, but only later, as the Lord’s day progresses, will her deathlike spiritual state be fully publicized. It will be during a second woe that a third of the men are killed.—Revelation 1:10; 9:12, 18; 11:14. This well illustrates a loyal group of revived Christians. The modern-day locusts had a job to do. The Kingdom good news had to be preached. Errors had to be exposed. Lost sheep had to be found. This tormented or stung Christendoms clergy,
Rather than announce the incoming Kingdom of God, Christendom’s clergy have chosen to remain with Satan’s world. They want no part with the locust band and their King, concerning whom John now observes: “They have over them a king, the angel of the abyss. In Hebrew his name is Abaddon [meaning “Destruction”], but in Greek he has the name Apollyon [meaning “Destroyer”].” (Revelation 9:11) As “angel of the abyss” and “Destroyer,” Jesus had truly released a plaguing woe on Christendom.
