I used to live in surburban Brisbane, and we used to have maybe 3 or 4 "big" spiders a year -- huntsman spiders. But, seriously they're nothing worth worrying about -- the big ones don't bite humans and they aren't lethal. In fact, they're actually a good thing because they kill other insects. Once you've seen one or two, you'll realize they aren't a big deal. And if you're worried, just buy a can of insect spray, and spray the thing until you're sure its going to die.

Really, once you're here you'll get over it very quickly. Just ask your neighbour for help the first time it happens, they'll explain it all to you, and will probably find the whole situation amusing.

Australians are much more wary about a little spider called the Red-back, but this is only encountered in the dusty dark corners of some old back-yard shed. In any case, there are very few fatalities from spiders in Australia, and there's antivenom and good medical facilities. In fact, apparently only 250 people recieve the antivenom for the red-back each year -- out of a population of 21,000,000 and most of these would be the "handy-men" who are cleaning up their musty old garage or doing work in the garden, and just aren't being sensible (like opening their eyes).

I've moved to inner Sydney this year, and haven't seen a single spider.

Trust me, Australia is NOT crawling with spiders at every corner -- Australian spiders are very low risk. I can't tell you the name of a single Australian off the top of my head who has been bitten or died from spiders -- none of my friends, family, nor anything on TV or the news.

Australia has some of the most venomous spiders in the world. Some are aggressive and some quite large. If you're in an apartment in the city, no worries. If you're in the suburbs or further out back, take a look at the linked page for some of the crawlies you may get to meet.

I hate spiders too, but im still going to Oz in Jan, only for a year but i would love to stay if possible.
Try not to think about them to much, deal with them when you have too, or find a nice Aussie Hunk to do it for you. Ha ha ha

As a general rule,in summer you may encounter a 'huntsman' spider in the house. They are large but not poisionous. As their name suggests, they hunt other insects.Other than that, you don't really get bothered too much.

I was just in Sydney and it has no more or less insects than anywhere else in the world. If you live in the "outback" you may have issues, but in a metroplitan area you should be fine.

If you are going to let your fear of spiders determine where you are going to live, maybe you should stay where you are.

Good luck
