It could either be rabies, in which case take him to a vet & get him checked out asap because it can be passed on to other animals including yourself.
Or
A dental problem, again you should take him to a vet to get his teeth checked.

He's just excited. Some strange critters have come into his yard, and he wants to know what they are. If they happen to be in the yard when he goes out, just keep a close eye on him. The armadillos will more than likely just roll into a ball. I've never heard of an armadillo attacking another animal. Your dog will just try to chew on them or roll them around the yard, but won't be able to physically hurt them. He will eventually lose interest. If you are afraid he or the armadillos will be hurt, get the dog back into the house. I don't know why all these people think it's rabies when you've made it clear he does this when he's sniffed where they've *been* past tense.

When you hear of a dog foaming at the mouth...you automatically assume rabies or distemper. Don't listen to the ridiculous people who are trying to scare you with the unrealistic rabies theory. If your dog had either of these things...rabies or distemper...there would be many tell-tale signs...24/7...not just when your dog sniffs where the armadillo once stood.
In your dogs case...with his keen sence of smell...I think it's just a case of excitability. He's angry at the creature for being in his yard.

If he only foams when he sees the armadillos it's not rabies like most have replied here... sounds like he is just over agitated or over excited about the critters.

He is just getting exciting when he goes to where they have been. Don't worry about it being Rabies. For some reason he is just getting really excited about armadillos.

I agree Rabies...Did he get his shots? Do not mess with this it is fatal to humans once symptom's occur. I just received my series of rabies shots and trust me it is not much fun. Call a vet or your county health dept, even the police if you have too...Also, you don't have to be bitten to be exposed to rabies, It is found within the saliva, and blood and can be transmitted in any open cut no matter how small. Wish you luck and I hope it is not rabies. God Bless

He could have rabies. If he's foaming at the mouth, going blind, and losing his motor functioning skills. It means he has rabies. What losing his motor functioning skills means is that he starts walking and it almost looks likes he's drunk. good luck.
