Hi! as you probably know, Prader willi is a genetic syndrome caused by a problem on cromosome 15. It has quite a few manifestations, and obesity is only one of them. As far as the obesity is concerned there is not a lot of studies proving or disproving the benifit. There is a recent japanese study which I have cut an abstract from that had a promising result: "BACKGROUND: In Prader-Willi syndrome (PrWS), marked obesity is the most serious and common complication, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. Because of the associated psychosocial difficulties, bariatric surgery appears to be the only effective treatment. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old man with PrWS weighing 108 kg (BMI 50 kg/m2), underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP). 3 months before the RYGBP, he weighed 146 kg (BMI 68.5), partly because of heart failure. 18 months after RYGBP, he weighed 92.4 kg (BMI 43.3), with no postoperative complications. Moreover, he showed considerable increase in serum HDL-cholesterol levels with reciprocal reduction in LDL-cholesterol after the surgery. CONCLUSION: RYGBP resulted in satisfactory weight loss and improvement in serum lipid profile in a Japanese morbidly obese patient with PrWS."
I did check many other sources though, and as it looks today, this kind of treatment for prader willi is still in the testing phase. I can tell you thought that it will probably only benifit the obesity part of the syndrome (though this is probably a good enough reason). There was a free article from american family physician that summened up what we know about prader willi and treatment pretty well and in understandable english; http://www.aafp.org/afp/20050901/827.html
Good Luck!

I had trouble understanding this question as well. I don't know the answer but this is what they meant.

"prader will" is a syndrome ( prader will syndrome)PWS is a complex genetic disorder that includes short stature, mental retardation or learning disabilities, incomplete sexual development, characteristic behavior problems, low muscle tone, and an involuntary urge to eat constantly, which, coupled with a reduced need for calories, leads to obesity.

Bariatric = The branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity.

So the question is does surgery to treat obesity (i'm guessing stapling or lipo?)

I don't think stomach stapling will help because PWS individuals have an involuntary urge to eat... in otherwords feeling full doesn't make them stop. So they won't stop even if they're stapled....

Edit.. ah looks like the post below me is on the ball. i guess stomach stapling isn't the type of bariatric surgery you mean.

I saw a show on them and it seemed like these people are always ravenously hungry and cannot stop eating--it's a congenital disorder. I would think that maybe they would burst their reduced stomachs. But I see that someone above posted stats saying the surgery DOES help them.

Ideally-obesity surgery is not advised for anyone due to genetic disorder--but if really wanted two stage duodenal switch is more preferable.

I can tell this to you because my friend got his brothers done in India-as it was very economical for her to get it done there.
