Yes they do! I can tell my Pup, to go get Daddy, and instead of a paper, toy, or food, she goes straight to Daddy. When I tell them bedtime they go straight to their pen. When I say meds, she jumps in the chair eagerly, since she knows cookie follows. And my Cat is the same way.
Yes they understand us.

I believe that dogs understand a few words that they hear often and associate with either good or bad events. For example, my dog KNOWS the words WALK, TREAT, RIDE, BELLY RUB, SHAKE, SIT, DOWN, and NO. The Walk word is epically ingrained in his mind as if we accidentally use it in casual conversation and he happens to be around, he will start hopping (yes hopping) around and will then run to the closet where we keep his leash. This tells me that he DOES understand a few words. I do not think they can under stand full conversations, or more than a few words, but I do believe they can read emotion and body language better than some people can.

I think it is the action we expect and the place we say the words. When walking my dog if a car comes down the road I say "wait". She stops on the side of the road til it passes then resumes her walk. When we are getting ready to go out she heads towards the door. I might be putting my shoes on and say "wait". She sits down while I finish. So "wait" to her is 'stop moving wherever you are.' I have noticed that when cars come towards us she stops sometimes without me saying 'wait' so I think they associate words with situations. Maybe it will keep her from getting hit should she get loose. unless she is in the middle of the road when she sees the car. m

No they really don't.
Let me give you an example.
We have a Lab and when it's raining he gets sopping wet. When we let him in we say "Perk - you're wet" and dry him at the laundry room door. He knows to stop at the laundry room when we say that.
I discovered it can be a bright sunny day and when I let him in I can say "Perk, you're wet and he sits down at the laundry room door waiting to be "dried off".
He associates the words with an action. He doesn't truly understand them.

They associate certian words with a picture in their brains such as sit ,down, come, go for a walk, etc. They mainly understand the tone of your voice. Such as Happy tone and angry tones.

animals do understand certain words that you repeat over and over esp.related to the action of the words.mostly i think they relate to your tone of voice.many animal trainers direct them where to go and what to do and what they want,so i believe that animals understand us very well.

Pets dun understand wat their owner says but they can understand wat their owners ask them to do if u train them well. You have to communicate with them with signals. You can teach them easy words such as jump , sit , come , and they do understand this if ur close with them.
