Hey Guys.
Firstly, Im an Atheist, lets get this clear. However, im getting somewhat sick of the moronic questions aimed at us, as if we are firstly some sort of coherent group and secondly, as if we are Aliens.
I mean, 'Do Atheists fight on a battlefield'? Jesus, lets just ask 'Do Atheists Breath?'
Is this just me, or does any one else think we need less idiotic questions and more debate?

mnstlgirl, CS Lewis was however famous for smoking Opium..do the math.
Ludwig Wittgenstein believed in Word Games. The phrase 'Jesus', in this context, is nothing to do with religious belief, its more to do with expression of frustration. Read up on him, it may enlighten you

I get religious zealots and bigots giving me a hard time about my resort and my theological beliefs all the time. I'm not an atheist, I just believe in my own private way with my own private thoughts. Being a private semi-religious type seems to upset the bigots as much as being an agnostic/atheist. I advocate privacy in ones beliefs, if the whole world kept their religions out of sight there would be less conflict and war. I also advocate not teaching religion to tiny kids, that can only confuse and separate them, turn them into idiotic adults who come onto Q&A and reveal their hate and disgust of any un-belivers. Isn't that the same as fundementalist Muslims? Public religion causes hate, wars, confusion, elitism and seperation that is as bad as barbed wire. Just because we don't follow your brainwashed ways, does'nt make us gene pool slurry. And nobody told me why the Devil would punish sinners, that would make him Gods employee, would'nt it?

It's refreshing to read this question and most of the answers so far. Just asking the question has, for about the first time in my experience of this site, generated some intelligent commentary on the subject of religious belief or non-belief, almost free of the usual unsupported assertions and insults.

It would be good if all discussions of religion in here could be conducted at this or a still higher level. But many of the contributors to the site are barely adolescent (I mean it literally) and still have a lot of experiencing to do so we will have to wait a bit longer. And there will always be fresh supplies of dewy-eyed innocents to make up the ranks.

I agree that a lot of theists ask really stupid questions about atheists...but atheists do the same to theists (even if it is just meant to piss them off). So less idiotic questions would be nice....but there simply are a lot of idiots out there on both sides.

I also don't see how it's possible to have a debate in a question answer format....that's what debate forums are for. This place is more for stating opinions.

No, not at all. Keep it coming.

I think that anyone who is wavering between belief and non-belief needs to come to this site. After reading the nonsense and illogical that forms 99% of the 'anti-atheist' position on R&S, a well-educated person on the fence will be forced to conclude that theistic belief is an emperor with no clothes on.

I thank the illogical believers here for baring their souls in public. It does our cause far more good than we would ever be able to by ourselves.

If you are unaware, the phrase, "There are no athiests on a battle field" is a famous quotation. It does not refer simply to a battlefield, but to the particular moments in life which could be described as "battlefields". If, for example, a person who claimed to be an athiest were to receive the news that s/he or a close loved one was terminally ill, that would be one of life's "battlefields". Would the athiest pray for a miracle? Thereby showing him/herself not to be an athiest at all? The point of the question is, when we really get down to it, if a gun was pointed to our heads, would we athiests pray for our lives?

So, are there any athiests on a battlefield? You misread the question.

Duh.

So mnstlgirl:
"Funny how a self-proclaimed atheist would say "Jesus". C.S. Lewis noted that even if you WANT to deny it, our everyday speech will remind us of God all around us. You may be witnessing to what you don't understand yet without even realizing it."

By this logic, every Wednesday you praise Woden, every Thursday you praise the mighty Thor and as for the months, do you realise what they are based on? In "witnessing" by using everyday speech ( a totally ridiculous concept to any atheist and even to most christians) you are probably more Norse Gods and Greek and Roman Gods "witnessing" than ever a christian. Welcome to a Pagan world by your method.

Aye, it's bloody annoying sometimes, especially when people just have no proper concept of what atheism is...they call it a "religion". It's not; it's simply the state of, actively or passively, not holding a belief in a higher power. Not neccesarily active disbelief. Not hating religion.

Everyone is entitled to their "Beliefs" And Debate is good. We don't need the stupid comments, but you know that there are plenty out there that will give them!
Good luck.
But it does bring to mind the Rowan Atkinson sketch about the devil. No offence you understand.
I'm Agnostic. Now watch me "Get It"

Not an atheist but still feel your pain!

I am gnostic whereas the rest of mine or my wife's family are hardcore rightwing Christians! It make the Pagan celebration of Christmas interesting for conversation!
