"You're thinner now, " sounds like the person's down with somethin and someone has just recently told me that i'm "slender". Didn't sound right either.

You look wonderful! Wish I had your willpower to actually stick to a goal. You make my eyes green with envy.

Good question... I hate that kinda remarks.. Like "ooooh you lost some weight" or "you're thinner" or "you look better"... Because it kind of means the person was ugly/fat before... I think that the comparative is the problem.
So my answer is I think what we would like to hear is, simply, "you look good" (/great/awesome/...) :)

After losing 40 lbs I still love to hear people tell me simply how wonderful I look. I have never minded when people asked if I have lost weight (I know some are offended though) and just telling them they look good is nice too. People that have lost weight love to hear it.

I work at a weight loss center and my clients love it when I comment by saying "Wow! How much weight have you lost?"

People think that you are implying that they were fat before if you comment on weight loss, but in my experience, people love that you have taken notice.

I think that when someone works hard and loses weight, they love to hear compliments about the way they look. Something like, "You look great!" should suffice and will let them know that their hard work is paying off.

"You are looking very well." or some comment that is indirect seems to be the best approved.
A fellow went on vacation and died his hair. My comment when I saw him was that his vacation did him good. He looked so rested.
