Here's a few tips that may help you out- Learn to use a sling if it's allowed- that helps stability and will make your shooting much more accurate. They are complicated to use correctly, so it's probably a good thing to learn now. Learn trigger and breath control. Take a breath, let out part of it- hold it- then fire. You only want the pad of your trigger finger to contact the trigger, and only that finger to move- do not squeeze your whole hand when firing. Pull the rifle into your shoulder when firing, and try to hold it the same way for every shot. Lastly- this is an odd tip which only works for M16/AR15 rifles. I was told to push my head forwards, to touch the back of the charging handle with my nose when firing (charging handle doesn't move when firing an M16 of course). I tried it and found my groups improved. It provides a consistent index for your head. On full auto fire (CQC), you may get more control by putting the butt of the gun on your right chest muscle rather than the shoulder pocket (an ex SWAT team member told me this). You may have to collapse the stock one notch for it to fit properly in this position. If the instructor tells you to do things a different way, it's probably best to listen to them lest you incur their wrath :)
