A dental implant is really a very simple metal screw which is designed to thread into the bone of the jaw and to allow for the attachment of a (prosthetic) tooth at the top. Implants are made of Medical grade Titanium or Titanium Alloy. Your dentist will purchase the implants in sterile packaging and place them in a small hole in the bone which he or she has prepared as part of the implant placement procedure. The bone will fuse to the implant over a short period of time in a process referred to as 'osseointegration' and once this process is successfully completed (3 to 4 months) the implant is permanently in place.

I wanted to add that it can be more than 1 tooth that is put on at a time with an implant. The screws go in the same way, but a bridge or a partial denture can go in the same way. One reason to do this rather than dentures is if there is loss of tissue in the mouth after removal of the teeth and they keep sliding around, clanking etc.

a screw with a tooth on it
You drill a hole in the bone, and screw the titanium screw in. Then you wait for the bone to grow into the screw to make it all solidified. Then you stick a nice looking crown on top. There are types of implants you can stick in in one visit but generally the success rate of these is questionable.
You need good bone for it and sometimes you may need to have assisted bone growth to make your gums look nice before the implant is put in.

It is the latest in replacing missing teeth.Normal replacements that is prosthetic teeth are placed on the jaw bone.Implants are more like the normal teeth in that theyhave post like extensions that are placed exactly like the roots within the jaws.Hence they can bear more forces and act more like the natural teeth .
