Lol that is great! not to every ones taste mind but why not do it, its good not to take your own inevitable death as something depressing, you'll be saving your self and family some money too, if you want to make your own coffin and while still alive have an alternative use for it then good for you, why some people might take offense to your idea I'll never know, death shouldn't be depressing or offensive, after all deaths just like taking a walk into another world, you do what you want, its your prerogative, I'm sure your not the first to want to do something like your suggesting and you wont be the last, don't be in with the norm if its not what you want, just remember to make sure your death is in the far future and make sure when it is your time to go into your coffin permanently that before your death you made sure its strong and sturdy, wouldn't want it falling apart on you on the way to the cemetery. Good on you and Good luck. x

I can understand the need of cost cutting a few things when the time comes, but don't you think your ideas are a little "morbid"? I don't think I'd like to use a coffin as a book shelf or a bed or a coffee table. That sounds a little creepy to me.
Keep thinking of better ideas....how about creamation? That is cheaper yet!

People would find the idea creepy. Truth is, most people pay way more than they need to on a coffin.. thousands of dollars for the "best" box that the corpse isn't even around to appreciate, because they feel guilty or don't want to look bad. More would be gained by just buying cheaper coffins than precycling them

Stories of people using their coffins as "Blanket" chests or other furniture in the bedroom are numerous.
I am under orders from my father-in-law to use the cheapest form of plywood and timber to make his coffin, get a flat-bed truck to take him to the crematorium and give him a good send off.
The thing is I agree, why spend all that money for a box that you aren't going to see and only shows how flash you are with your money?

at least you would get your moneys worth just don't make a coffin with a seal to keep moisture out it also keeps gases in the coffin can explode and your arms would go flying out but don't believe me read about King Henry' s funeral service. hot day, sealed coffin, inocent bystanders you don't want that to happen to cut down on disease all bodies have to be embalmed in order to be buried in a grave site within city limits and if a body is found without being embalmed first your friends might be charged for murder yea i know it sucks but you have to pay the fare to cross the river of styxs. lol hope this helps

Actually, that is very creative! (Although many people would find that morbid and fatalistic.)
You could do what the MUNSTERS have done and make it a PHONE BOOTH! (Totally classic and stylin'!)
It's important to have good wood, and that it would not waste space when it is placed. If you make it a bookshelf, make sure the holes drilled are relatively shallow (and to not have "Leakage" for last use).
It's a fun idea. Very Utilitarian. (and maybe disturbing for some.)

Undertakers that are rip offs use the coffins
a few times. Every now and then someone in
that field gets caught.

there are coffins for rent nowadays, these coffins are reusable. i'm still alive but i had my own coffin for almost two years now and i intend to use it only once, i certainly do not want to die twice.
and you're a selfish man, why ask your friends to bury you when you're dead and pay the undertaker, why not just rot in your deathbed when your dead.

Why go through the entire process, anyway? What a waste of money. When you're dead, that's it. Being pumped full of chemicals and painted is not going to change that.

They do have rentals. You have a nice one for your viewing and then you get the pine box for the burial or the cremation.
But the really great thing about it is that when the lease is up you never have to pay for extra mileage.
