I keep hearing that gospel means good news. So I was wondering, what exactly is good about the news in the gospals? It doesn't read like particually good news to me.

Yes, that Christ died BUT... if you read, it actually says the 'good news of the kingdom', meaning the kingdom of God. The good news is actually that we will at one point finally be done with the whole mess of evil, and sin. Satan will be done away with and people will be perfect again!
Matthew 24:14

Yes, the gospel means "good news"
First the bad news: All men are fallen (sinful) and will not be able to reach God with their own efforts.
The Good News: God (Jesus) came down as a man to make restitution between God and Man. Jesus paid the price (went to hell on a cross) for all the sins of the world. A just God demands that all sins be somehow accounted for and paid for. God Father knowing that man could never accomplish this task sent His son to accomplish this. So, now every person living has a decision. He can either accept what God has done, fall down and praise Jesus and be saved or he can refuse the gift and the efforts of God and accept the punishment for his own sins on himself for all eternity.

It's not good news for everyone, people like Nero, and Adolf have a lot to worry about (even though they sleep, they will wake). I have mixed emotions. Not that I've ever been that large on the world scene, just little stuff, childish stuff, long time ago stuff...anyway, it's either glory or shame!

All of what you read in the gospels, should lead you to the Resurrection, with the right attitude. You're going to get there, one way or the other. Believe it, or not...

No it is not good news at all. Here is a example of the perfect pastor..

Results of a computerized survey indicates that the perfect pastor (henceforth PP) preaches exactly fifteen minutes. PP condemns sin, but never upsets anyone. PP works from 8 am to midnight; pp is also the janitor. PP is a great family person and spends quality time with the pk's. PP makes $60.00/week, wears nice clothes, buys good books, drives a good car, and gives about $50.00/week to the church.

PP is 28years old and has been preaching for 30 years.

PP is wonderfully gentle and attractive looking. PP has a burning desire to work with the teenagers and spends all of his time with the senior citizens.

PP smiles all of the time with a straight face because PP has a sense of humor that keeps PP seriously dedicated to the task. PP makes fifteen calls a day on parish families, shut-ins, and the hospitalized; spends all of PP's time evangelizing the unchurched, and is always in the office when needed.

If your pastor does not measure up, simply send this letter to six other parishes that are tired of their pastor, too. Then bundle up your pastor and send your pastor to the church at the top of the list. In one week, you will receive 1,643 pastors...one of them should be perfect.

Have faith in this letter.

One parish broke the chain and got its old pastor back in less than three months.

:-)

The Good News is that Jesus Christ conquered death! His resurrection witnessed by many people and documented by His enemies, His followers, and secular witnesses that were not connected to either.

Jesus Christ is the Messiah (Annointed One) promised for centuries to redeem our sinfulness and fulfill the ancient promises made to our fathers in faith. Heaven is now possible because of His Love for you.

What is good about the news...simple..."Hi I'm freebird with your 13 eyewitness news update...Did you hear that all you have to do is except Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior and ask him for forgiveness and you get to go to heaven and live in eternity with your Creator and your heavenly family?"

The good news is there is a way out without being punished for all our wrongs. Like it would be good news to you if I would pay a ttraffic ticket you got. You did it wrong, im paying the concequences. So, how would that not be good news?

Jesus wants to pay your fines. If you let Him that is.

Hey good question! And the good news is definetely for you!
Here is the Bible in a nutshell:

God has been around forever and will always be here forever, he made time, science, humanity, all things, so:
God created the world and everything and everyone in it.
He made man and woman (Adam and Eve) because he wanted to be in relationship with them.
He loved them and gave them everything they would ever need. He warned them about one thing that they could not do, eat of a certain tree.
The devil, who God also created, decided to tempt Adam and Eve into eating the fruit of that tree and told them they would know everything and be like God.
God gave Adam and Eve free will, so that they could choose to Love him. God would not make them be like robots and force them to Love Him, thats why we have free will, He wants us to choose to love Him.
So anyways, Adam and Eve messed up and by doing so, brought sin (not doing what God wishes) into the world, and the world was cursed. That is why we have so much evil, disease, pain, sorrow, and suffering in the world. Our decendent Adam brought it into the world, and we all have to pay the consequence.

So the entire Old Testament is about God trying to love His people as much as possible, the Israelites were His chosen people. He taught them, guided them, and blessed them and loved them and was as patient as he could be. He gave them the ten commandments and that was the law.
But like the loving father he is, when they screwed up and broke the law he had to dicipline them, just like our parents dicipline us.

All the sacrifices and stuff in the Bible is the way that God designed for His people to make up for what they had done. In order to be forgiven they had to sacrifice a perfect animal to God.

This got really old though and the world became more and more evil. So God decided to send his only Son, Jesus Christ to show us how to live and to be the perfect sacrifice.

Jesus was God in the flesh! He was born of a virgin Mary, and then grew up and had diciples like you have heard. He healed people, taught people, and perfomed many miracles. The leaders then got upset because Jesus said he was God and people had to follow him in order to be saved and have eternal life. So the leaders had Jesus arrested, and killed him. But on the 3rd day, like he predicted, he rose from the dead. He even appeared to hundreds of people to prove it! Then all his diciples when out and taught the good news, like what is mentioned in the rest of the Bible.

Eternal life is the good news! God loved us and the world so much that he couldn't stand losing us! He is fair and just, and if we kept breaking his laws he would have to punish us, but he gave us a way out, his Son. The good news is that if we confess that Jesus is Lord God, and that God raised him from the dead, and that his death took the punishment of our sin, that we will be forgiven and have eternal life and relationship in Heaven with God after we die. If we don't chose this, then we will be punished and go to hell, its that simple. Both Heaven and Hell are very real! The good news is that you can be saved, and that God loves you and wants you to live a life following him!

It is good news because Jesus laid down his life so that we would not have to go to hell. Everyone was headed there because of their rebellion to God and their sin nature.... If jesus had not come to earth and sacrificed his life to save us, there would be no escaping hell. But because He did, we may go to heaven rather than hell... all it takes is acknowleging the truth whatever guise it may come in.... And Jesus is the savior of all mankind. That is good news to me....
