Barium enema is a solution that is put inside your rectum so they can take x-ray pictures of your lower bowel to find out what is causing your symptoms as with a barium swallow that goes in the other end your mouth

A barium enema is an exam of the large intestine. Barium is a chalky radiopaque substance that will be inserted into your rectum via tube. The tube will be inserted and the barium will be pulled by gravity into your colon. During filling, a radiologist will look at your colon through an xray machine, that he will move over your body (it doesn't touch you). This exam doesn't hurt, but it does feel like cramps. After the doctor gets his pictures, an xray tech will take a few more pictures, and then drain the barium out of you. This exam is used to look at colon, when unexplained anemia (loss of blood), diverticulitis, family of colon cancer, or rectal bleeding occur.

A barium enema is a simple procedure wherein about 2 litres of a chalky substance(barium) is deposited into the bowels, rectum and lower intestine via a tube inserted into the anus. It looks like and IV back and is hung and drained into the body cavity.. This procedure is used when doctors wish to xray your intestines or bowels looking for problems. It is painless, and far less embarrassing than you might think.. Practise clenching yer bottom now, cuz believe me you are gonna need it...lol

Barium is radio opaque, or xrays will not go through it. A barium enema is used to detect problems in the colon that might be seen in an xray. Ordinarly, the intestines would not show up on an xray.

They fill you with a liquid solution through your rectum so they can x-ray you to see if there are any problems with your colon...and they aren't pleasant at all.
