Black (American) Muslims generally come from the branch of Muslims converted in prison. Blacks who have been to prison and who have accepted Islam during their stint in the big house make up a large percentage of this brand muslims.
However once a inmate has been converted in prison chances are those who are in contact with that inmate from the outside may also be influenced or inspired to investigate, convert and even become loyal followers of the religion. There are many who fit into this category, and it's helped them stay out of prison.
They like to term white folks as the "white devil" because they look back to the slavery days when the white man really was the devil. Would you blame them?
Do not be confused with other Black Muslims who may appear to be black and not even call you the white devil because they are most likely from some African country that just happens to have a lot of muslims. Zaire, Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, etc. are such countries.

I'm a Muslim and I'll tell you that those who call themselves "Black Muslims" are not true followers of Islam. How do I know this? Islam is simple. It teaches there is no God but Allaah (The God) and Muhammad is the Last and Final Prophet and Messenger. Muhammad (peace be upon him) is a decendant of the Prophet Abraham and a distant cousin of Jesus (peace be upon him). He was raised around savage pagans who believed in 360 gods. Muhammad was given revelation by the same God of Adam, Noah, Abaraham, Moses, David and Jesus and given the duty to let humanity know about the One and only God. The Prophet established Islam, the way of life for Muslims and revealed the final Holy Book called the Qur'an.
Fast forward to the begining of last century and you have a "black" man claiming to be God and claiming that all blacks are decended from God and all whites are devils. They called themselves Nation of Islam. This really wasn't a religion, just a cult who was trying to retaliate for hate crimes against blacks and groups like the KKK. They don't practice the Islam taught by Prophet Muhammad nor do they believe in the basic tenants of Islam. No Muslim considers the followers of "Nation of Islam" to be Muslims or practitioners of Islam. God's most fundamental law is: There is no parters with God, God is One. But the Nation of Islam believe that a man named Elijah Muhammad (not his original name) became God in the flesh. This is a lie and has nothing to do with Islam. Many followers of Nation of Islam realize that it is a hoax and study the true Islam and embrace the true Islam.
Basically, "Black Muslims" follow a cult that has nothing to do with Islam. Muslims follow Islam, a religion followed by about 1.5 billion people in the world of all races, colors and nationalities.
p.s. As a side note: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also did not condone violence such as terrorists do today in the name of Islam. He did, however, allow self-defence only when an aggresor begins a fight.

Churches in the West are becoming dens of thieves,
money changers, sellers of religious trinkets and
worldly music. Christ said that you have turned my
House of Prayer into a place of merchandise and
corruption such as the world has never seen.
Repent! Repent!
If this answer offends any of you devil worshipers,
take it up with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Don't mention God, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, Holy
Ghost, Holy Bible, Church, Christians, Religion or Spirituality if you don't
want to hear from me.

I am not muslim , and from your story I could say that the they realy have some racial issues, or at least their Imam has .
There should be no difference in teaching, but imams are still humans, and so they could have grudges, and preach them to their flock.
They do not have to say, but if they have bean thought to not publicly express their atitude towards different race and religion, you could only feel tension.

He was probably a member of the Nation of Islam. I don't know much about it, other than it's a racist group that hates White people, considers them evil. It's not real Islam, I think it's some twisted offshoot. They shouldn't call themselves Muslims, it confuses non-Muslims.

the "nation of islam" is a black group of recent origin that is grounded in ideals of black liberation.
Islam is a centuries old religion from the middle east.
I think that the so-called nation of islam wanted to imagine some connection to a non-European civilization, hence the islam thing, but it is, in my estimation, a far different thing from traditional islam.
