It's probably more safe if you don't meet him. He could be a rapist, stalker, or robber waiting for you to be his next victim.
Like another answerer said, try meeting people in a physical space so that you can get a better feel for these sorts of things, and actually have a relationship with them without having to take these sorts of leaps.
