Most dogs were bred to be how we know them today. Earlier species lived in packs just like coyotes.
The dog was probably the first species domesticated by man, about 100,000 years ago in southwest Asia. Ancestors of the modern wolf began to associate with primitive man, feeding on remains of hunted game and on other human leavings. Over the thousands of years that followed, groups of humans, and their increasingly domesticated wolf/dog companions, likely moved eastward and northward across Asia, eventually making their way over the Bering land bridge into North America. Along the way, their partially domesticated canine companions began accompanying other groups of humans encountered in the journey.

They have no natural habitat- they are domesticated animals. Before major cities existed, stray dogs would live on the outskirts of human settlements picking at garbage and other human refuse, or possibly roam the countryside in feral packs terrorizing livestock. They really didn't have much of a place back then, and they still don't, though a few may find places in peoples' homes, most won't.

They weren't strays before cities. They just existed like every other creature. If you meant, "How were dogs domesticated?" That's a different question. Stray dogs are societies' inability to care for what they have created. You should be more concerned with feral dogs - something, "strays" become.

I additionally feed my cats kangaroo (kangaroo mince is on hand at most supermarkets) and various other meats including chook necks, and pork. I also supply them any sort of moist food mainly the fishy form. I do not feel that cats or dogs must be fed a vegan food plan.

All modern dogs are evolved from the wolf and have been inbred for various reasons(work or owner vanity). They traveled and hunted for food in packs. There is power in numbers.
When dogs are castaway or abandoned they resort back to their natural instincts and become packs of vagabond dogs. Hope this answers your question.
