A visual would be helpful... Not everyone feels fearful of being alone, or 'left behind' by a marriage less life. Hands are very symbolic. It sounds like the artist may have taken a path of solitude and contemplation. People who spend time pursuing a contemplative life do not necessarily have an unhappy life. They can have a very full and fulfilling life inwards and socially. According to the Buddhists, and I am sure the Vedic texts as well, mudras are special hand positions that designate energy flow in different ways. This site might be of interest to you. Thanks for the opportunity to think about art and beyond. If it weren't for art, we wouldn't use our imaginations! :) It's one of my favorite subjects.

I think she feels lonely and probably was close to marriage, but never got it. Or, something happened that affected it. It could actually represent something else though, not necesarrily marriage- since hands are quite symbolic. It could mean work or even guilt. Such as in Hamlet. So, marriage being a bondage and commitment, the ring could symbolize something which bonds her. Or, she wants to be bound in some way. Well, it could be ALOT of things...
