I have chronic insomnia. I get it once, sometimes twice, a year and it lasts anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks. When I'm in its grip, there's not much I can do to fall asleep. My doctor wanted to prescribe me sleeping pills, but I refused as this would be just a temporary (and possibly addictive) solution.

Oftentimes, the insomnia is a result of not being able to shut my mind off. I think about 20 different things all at once or in rapid succession. The only thing that works for me is to force myself to focus on one subject. To do this, I either read an incredibly boring book (nothing good, as it will keep you pinned to the pages, which is counterproductive), or I make up a story in my mind. It's like writing and filming a movie but all in my brain. My "movies" have beginnings, character development, plot, action, etc. Most of the time I never finish the "movie" because I fall asleep before I get there. And that's the whole point! I'm just focussing my attention on ONE thing, rather than a million different things.

You can do the same, or meditate, concentrate on your breathing, do long division in your mind, start counting by 3s and see how far you get, etc. It doesn't matter what method you employ, just FOCUS.

Other options to try: warm bath with candles (even if you're a guy!); full body massage (if that's feasible); eat turkey for dinner (it contains triptofan, which is a natural "sleep" chemical...and it's why you get sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner!); take melatonin (similar to triptofan) - it comes in pill form which you can get at any place that sells vitamins and mineral supplements; get an "ocean" machine (plays the sound of the surf ebbing and flowing); listen to soft, new-agey music; get a lavender eye pillow (this is a soothing, calming herb - I have one and it does help me relax); drink a cup of warm milk (if you can stand it...I can't); warm milk with a shot of brandy or rum (again, if you can stand it).

Don't: exercise at night; eat closer than 3 hours before bed; read in bed; read anything stimulating; watch tv closer than 1 hour before bed; play any video or computer games; spend time on the internet; do anything that gets your heart racing (except sex) or adrenalin pumping.

I wish you luck!

I just asked this, too....

So far I've tried reading, taking a bath, lighting incense (specific scents can make you drowsy), and hot drinks.

If I had rum in the house, I'd heat up some milk, dump in a shot of rum, a splash of vanilla, and a little more rum. That always knocks me out.

After years of sleeping about 15 hours a week, I tried Prozac and the problem went away forever.

Start relaxing your body from the bottom to the top - calmly and slowly relax your feet, then your ankles, then your calves, knees, thighs, hands, wrists, forearms, etc. While you're doing this, keep your breathing slow and steady. If you're not asleep by the time you get to the top of your head, start again at the bottom.

(To help relax my muscles, I first gently tighten them, so I can really feel them relaxing.)

Eat something dairy or vegetable. Take a warm shower. Relax your mind by thinking of something you wish you could do (something made up to make your mind dream.) you should fall asleep pretty quick.
