The wedding would be in the evening at 7pm and I already bought this knee length dress and now I'm not sure if that is appropriate to wear on a wedding. My friend said wear something formal, is it okay if I wear a knee length dress? Would it still be considered formal?

Formal? Ask your host or hostess if this means 'black tie' or 'white tie' and you will probably learn that they don't mean 'formal' at all. They mean that they want the men to wear suits and the women to wear elegant dresses or very dressy pants outfits -- no golf shirts, no casual slacks, no business casual, etc. Probably one shouldn't wear a floor length gown unless one is a member of the bridal party, but aside from that, anything dressy enough for a New Year's Eve party at a ritzy hotel will do very well.

If it is a dressy dress, yes. It has been more than 20 years since I have seen anyone but the bride and bridesmaids wear a long dress.

a knee dress can be formal. It depends on the style of the dress.

I think it will be okay if it is not also showing cleavage or backless. You should only show off one body part at a time.

David's Bridal has all types of formal dresses.

yes it can be.+ I don't think they will be paying all that close attention to you, the focus of course will be on the bride and groom.
