Sure they can. Six year olds can do anything approximately 85% as well as seven year olds. That means, of course, that compared to an average seven year old, your estimate of the time is likely to be off by 4 hours. Now then, if you think the time is, say, 4pm, you will then know it is either noon or 8pm. If it is 8pm, it will be dark. That is how you tell time.

Mine started learning at 5. Pretty basic times the first was to learn 7 am and that if they get up before the first number on the clock reads 7 then WATCH OUT (no pun intended) Now they are 7 and have grasped the idea of digital and analogue time. If you give them a digital time they can convert it to analogue. I don't push it as I believe they will learn it when they are ready but mine love time and were constantly asking me about it. At 6 it is not expected to know lot's just the Oclocks then in grade 1 it is also the 1/2 past by I think it is grade 3 they really get to know time. If your child loves time here is a great site to get some worksheets from my kids love them. It also has maths and is a brilliant site

Yes, they can learn how to tell time at 6 years old & even younger. On the hour, by 1/2 hour & it is easy with counting by 5's to get by 15 mins., 30 mins. & 45 mins. After 60 minutes it starts into the next hour. Practice makes perfect & usually when time-telling is taught, it is easy for your child to know what time it is & when that favorite program comes on. Or, how many minutes more they have to pick up the toys, to read the book at night or to brush their teeth.

first the fundamentals, counting in singles up to 60, counting to 60 in sets of five, and knowing 1-12, once these are mastered then the concept of telling time can be taught, how to read a digital as well as a regular clock, hour hand, minute hand and second hand, am and pm, etc. yes a 6 year old can tell time if they are exposed and encouraged.

In Europe,yes.

I have met high schoolers here in the US that could not!

Katie B: FYI I live ,and always have,in So. California!
My business (for 20 years)has had a bus stop just outside my front
door.Several times I have had high schoolers ask me for the time.
I extend my arm to let them see my wrist watch, often they
shuffle their feet around and look away.I then ask "what's wrong"
The response is often "I am used to the other kind of watch, like
on the VCR" I say "do you mean a digital watch?" they say "yes"
I say "in school don't they still have a large standard clock in
every class and in the hallway?","how do you know when class is
over?" their face lights up and they answer "the bell rings!"
They seem happy to have answered this question correctly.
Well Katie B ,what do say about this? I think it is very sad.

I am surprised you can type with your foot in your mouth !

Well I could tell the time when i was 4 years old. So i think six year olds can tell time, or at least they should be able to.

Yes they should
The kindergarten standard in California is tells time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock. try this trick, I apologize in advance for the stereotype but 5 & 6 year olds get it
It works with my kindergarteners
The hour hand is Mrs. Hour (she is shorter) and she has a gentle voice and every time she points to a number she says its name
The minute hand is Mr. Minute he has a deep voice and everytime he points to 12 he says in a deep voice o clock. When he points to the 6 he says thirty.
The second hand is their baby, he just runs around and around them constantly!
Most kindergarteners start to get the concept of individual minutes because they can count by 5s by the end of k. But reading the clock to the minute is usually a challenge for this age. They keep working on it in first and second grades and so on.

Depends on the 6 year old.
My kid could tell time from a digital clock at age 5 and could tell the full hours and ½ hours on an analog
By 6 he could could tell time on the ¼ hours as well. (meanwhile his friend who was 8 couldn't tell time at all)
By the time he was 8 could tell to the closest 5 mins.
Depends on how much time (no pun intended) you spend with them teaching.
We used to make it fun. "We can't have milk and cookies until it's 3 o'clock" and I would ask for him to let me know when it was "milk & cookie" time.
