It is possible that you have some sort of brain disorder. It sounds more serious than just simple forgetfulness. You should see a doctor before you forget! you could have something as serious as Korsakoff's syndrome, which is a form of retrogade and reacurring amneisia, but I don't know you should see a doctor for a real diagnosis.
some people are just predispossed to have a worse memory than others, but maybe you are preoccupied about something, maybe all you're lacking is focus. That you noticed the problem is a good sign, you're ready to make a concious effort to overcome it. Here are three ways to improve your memory that aren't gimmicks, or supposed "facts" that will be disproved in 6 months:
1. Get more sleep. Real nighttime sleep through the night sleeping. It will help you focus, and naturally improve your memory.
2. Write things down. Write very important things down on the back of your hand, and write less urgent things on notes to your self.
3. Drink plenty of water, and eat right. This sounds irrelevent but it will give you the vitamins and such your body needs to operate at its best level.
here are MemoryTalk.com's tips for overcoming absent-mindedness:
"1. Put an item to be remembered in an unusual place. For example, put the clothes to be taken to the dry cleaners by the front door.
2. Have a memory place. This is a special place for keys, glasses, pills, notes to yourself, etc.
3. Organize your environment: a place for everything and everything in its place.
4. Set the alarm clock or oven timer to help you remember to do something at a certain time.
5. Keep a good calendar and list of things to do. Keep a notepad in your pocket, by your bed and in your car.
If a notepad is not available, write on your hand.
6. Use object cues. This is similar to the string around your finger. For example: turn your ring or watch around; put a crumpled bill in with your change; tip the lampshade. Noticing something different about the object will remind you that you are supposed to remember something. Review the association often so you don't forget what the changed object represents.
7. Write notes to yourself, posted in conspicuous places.
8. Don't procrastinate. Do it now! Then there is less opportunity for forgetting.
9. Talk to yourself: "I'm turning off the stove. The stove is off." For things to be done in the future: "Call Dr. Jones at 5:00. Dr. Jones wants me to call at five."
10. If you find yourself in another room and can't recall why, go back to where you started. This frequently brings back the memory. Sometimes just imagining yourself in the previous place is enough.
11. Count items you take with you so you won't leave any behind."
that site also has memory exercises you can do, the link is in sources. To improve your memory long-term you can also do things like Sudoku puzzles or crossword puzzles. But remember, you may have a disorder so see a doctor.

Is there a medical reason your memory is short?..have you seen a doctor?..I would try this..keep a small notebook and write down key words and short sentences to ivoke a memory response the next day..especially for work stuff which seems to be a problem with you..I would again see a doctor for a good exam..

My friend , you may suffer from short term memory loss. You need to see a doctor about it.
Its annoying I know. Im going through teh same thing. And its not fun.
But jsut beware of the medications, many are very dangerous. Seek alternative ways to focus and not forget so easy. Repetitions make you remember .
so whenever you dont want to forget repeat THAT which you dont want to forget until you know it by heart. Then you wont forget it.

You are looking at this memory thing all wrong man. This is a good thing. Say you go out one night and pick up a fat chick and do the do. You can tell you friends you don't remember doing that and they will believe you. Or say your friend's wife is like super fine and you grab her *** and he confronts you on it just say you don't remember doing that. The possibilities are endless man.

Well, if you remember to check the answers here you're okay. If not, go to the doctor. No one else is certified to give you advice on something like that.
