I have a 17 year old cat who is a male and is an orange tabby. He has been acting strangely for a couple of years. You see, he hisses at the mail carrier and then sometimes chases him or her down the block. As a result, the mail carrier gets afraid and once stop delivering our mail to our house. My mother had to resolve this issue and sign a contract with our local post office. He hisses at people in particular people who wear hats. Now, he cannot be outside in particular when they deliver the mail or she or he will not give us the mail. Is he acting strangely? My grandmother thinks maybe he had a tramatic experience with the person who put him in the bound and he remembers it.. Is this weird behavior for a cat? What is with my 17 year old cat?

If this just happened within the past couple years then a mail carrier or someone wearing a hat must of traumatized him by doing something physically abusive or along those lines (like kicking him). If the memory was from the pound then it would of lasted however long you had him.

A cat in Connecticut USA had the same problem but was under a restraining order AND medications for a mental illness. AND THIS WAS A CAT. It was so bad it made the news on Yahoo! a few months ago. You are lucky your situation is not that bad.

Otherwise it might just be old age taking a toll on the brain.

Your cat is old and crabby and maybe not feeling very well and why would you leave your 17 year old cat outside anyway?
Cats cause more trouble when they are left outside and not kept indoors at all times then you would care to know about.
Your cat must be a real terror if you mail carrier refuses to deliver your mail because your cat isn't indoors where is should be kept.
You ask what's with your 17 year old cat, the owners are to blame for letting it outdoors in the first place. It's a wonder that someone hasn't sued you because of your cat. When a cat gets that old it needs special care and not to run around outside at will and chase people at will.
I doubt the mail carrier did anything to your cat to get it to chase the carrier and who else has your cat chased away?
I'm a cat lover and when I read or hear about people who let their beloved cats outside and then complain about one thing or another about someone complaining that the cat chased or has bitten someone, that really pisses me off because I know that they are not taking good care of their cat at all.
I've raised cats for many years and know what I'm talking about too because I've worked with vets and have seen for myself what becomes of cats who are allowed to run around outside by themselves so don't blame the cats but the owners are to fault every time.

I had to laugh! My black cat, "BC" would literally walk down the path to the gate, between the hedges that flanked our home and chase dogs away. He also would not allow any intruders of any kind. They get old, they get protective, territorial, cranky. They simply love their people on the inside and do not approve of anyone or anything disrupting that peace. Much like humans they rely on what they are used to - family. Just love him for as long as he is your protector.

Cats are like people as we age our brains change. It is possible that your cat is suffering from dementia and is reliving experiences from the past as present actions. Therefore the assault from the person with the hat may have just happened yesterday in his mind.

Your cat could be developing dementia or problems with his eyes, both due to old age. You could take him to a vet and have him checked out. Either way, it's not a good idea to allow him outside by himself.

The poor old man has gone a little loopy in his old age. There's nothing wrong with that. Keep an eye on Grandma, too.

He's dying.

17 years is pretty long for a cat.

lol sounds like a dog trait, dogs are known to have little peeves like this. It's not unlike cats to behave like this either, you know they do have a such thing as pet therapists.
