since most suppression of women is enforced through religious beliefs, i would agree that atheism has made it possible to not suppress women

No offense, but I don't want to be equal with men. I love men, but I am a woman. I would like my value as a woman (my characteristics that are different than male characteristics) to be respected. I don't want to gain the respect of men because of the ways in which I can be like them.
When men fully appreciate the role of a woman as a mother, homemaker, nurturer, comforter, and "help suitable", suppression will end.
As long as a woman is only valued in society for the work she can do "equal to a man," she is still suppressed by the male world.
How would atheism accomplish that?

No it had nothing to do with atheism. Well maybe it could be seen that way because traditionally woman in religion have been the homemakers but i doubt any of the suffragettes thought about that at the time!

Yes. Males who suppress women are usualy either uneducated or very conservative. By conservative I refer to people who are set in their traditional ways and will not consider other options. Unfortunately, religion is one of the longest running conservatisms in the world today. If everyone started believing in the human race instead of fairy tale gods, we could stop separating people into categories like race and sex.

...which came first the chicken or the egg?
...the chicken is in the egg and the egg is in the chicken...
They came at the same time...first there was an image of God, then it was separated at the rib...alone man is imperfect as is woman- but together they are made whole...
...only Love can lead the way...God is Love...God's Image is male and female- both...
