You could fly Delta is about $125 and there is no direct flights (http://www.cheaptickets.com).
But if you have to the bus well cost around $90 bucks (http://greyhound.com/home.asp) , South Bend is straight north of Indy about 2.25 hours and the bus well make a few stops. There's no commuter train to Indy anymore.
I would rent a car for the day and miles and turn it back in at the Indy airport, and don't waste your money on the extra Ins. (http://www.cheaptickets.com) go with Avis and get the smallest car you can it well cost between $70 and $80 bucks and fill it up when you get to Indy, this is a little cheaper and you can stop when you want. good luck

I don't know where you are coming from, but, why don't you fly into Indy from wherever. Its usually cheaper that flying into South Bend. Or, rent a car. Get on U.S.31 South in South Bend. Take it all the way to the North side of Indy, Get off on 465 bypass and go to exit 11. That's the airport exit. Its about a 3 hour trip by car. Lots of stop lights between here and there. And sometimes the traffic gets bad. I do know that 465 has some road construction going on, but, it is still open and traffic may become a little slower, but, they don't usually have traffic stopped.

I grew up in northern IN, and live in Bloomington now. The best way to get from South Bend to Indy..is definitely to rent a car. The drive is about 3 hours more or less. It's pretty desolate up there..and the southbend airport is very small.
DO NOT depend on local transportation if you have to fly to south bend. Either have someone that is indy or in the area that you know and have them pick you up..or rent a vehicle.
If you drive..YES US 31 is the BEST way to get to indy.
You can literally drive from South Bend on US 31 all the way to DOWNTOWN INDY at the circle.....so definitely take that route.
IN people are really nice...they are more than happy to help too.

There aren't many trains in Indiana, these days. Take Greyhound or fly on down from South Bend.

Your best bet is to you use mapquest.com and or using yahoo by typing in the zip code and figuring out how to get there. But mapquest is the best bet for you to get where you need to go.
