We went on the 15 day Hawaii Cruise from L.A. with Princess Cruises. It was great and we met a lot of nice people. I have been on 4 ships and my favorite was the Star Princess we took to Alaska.

There are so many nice options leaving from the East Coast. I would say my favorites would be Hawaii, Panama Canal and Mexican Riviera. To choose one, I think it would be the Panama Canal, but Hawaii and the Riviera are also great. You also can get some Alaska cruises from the East Coast and Cunard does a "short" world cruise as well.
My favorites lines (on the East Coast) would be Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean and Crystal. It really just depends on your budget.
If you are wanting to spend a little more, I would say the Celebrity Infinity. If you are on a budget, Royal Caribbean Serenade of the Seas is a great ship. Both of these leave from San Diego.
Leaving from Los Angeles, if you want to spend a little more, the Crystal Symphony is a great ship, the Celebrity Infinity again, Cunards Queen Elizabet 2, Oceania Regatta, The Yachts of Seabourn Seabourn Legend, Regent Seven Seas Mariner, Silversea Shadow, and Celebrity Summit.
If you want a nice cruise, but don't want to spend quite as much, the Norweigan Sun, Princess Coral Princess, Diamond Princess, and Island Princess.
If you are on a budget, then Royal Caribbean is the way to go. Vision of the Seas is my favorite from Royal Caribbean leaving Los Angeles.
Choosing between Los Angeles or San Diego, I think I would go with Los Angeles just because there are so many more options.
I hope this helps!
