I live in San Francisco and think of Sears as a greasy spoon. That being said, sometimes you need some good greasy spoon food!

In Boston, I used to go to Steve's. It is in Back Bay, not far off Mass Ave, if I remember correctly. Run by some Greeks and you get a solid breakfast there with plenty of coffee.

You are looking for Rosebud Diner in Davis Square. It is a trolley car diner with all the traditional comfort food and the service definitely has "character".

Enjoy.
