The rule in our home is as long as you are going to school you will have a place to live.
If you don't go to school then you are expected to contribute to the household by obtaining a job and following the rules of the house set by use the parents.

After the age of 18, the longer children stay at home, the less likely they are to begin to develop the necessary skills needed to live independently. This can also undermine their faith in their own abilities to be take of themselves and manage their own lives.

Now, if the 18 year old is a polite, respectful helpful individual who is working and paying room & board and has plans for college, I don't see a problem with them remaining in their parents' home for an additional year or two.

However, if a child is 18, and is working, BUT has no plans for college, there's no reason why they shouldn't save their money and work on moving out.

There's another thing that kids often forget, parents are people, too. Many 18 year olds are wrapped up with their own lives and their own activities. This means that they may fail to realize that their parents might like some privacy and alone time with one another, before the kids decide to cart their butts off to a nursing home.

Parents do love their children...but sometimes they'd like to love them living somewhere else.

This is a rule that varies form one family to another. Most law in the USA obligate parents support their children until the age of 18.
I think people must live their home only if they need not because is 18 and the family doesn't feel responsible for them anymore.
I also think that allowing their children live home just when they feel ready for it will give them a better sense of value that it will be returned by praising more there family...after all, when the parents get old, it would be a good opportunity of their son or druthers return this favor by not sending them to an asylum and be under care of strangers until they die.
From where I come from most people just live their home when they got married (man or women).

i'm from greece. Here, we can live with our parents for as long as we want. But we make sure that we have our own job and we can earn our living. Some times, even if a person get married, he/she continue living close to the parents!! Life here, maintains the family picture : family get together in holiday - all the important moments in someones life - parents and kids are like friends when the kids grow up... It's really nice!!!

It is a US thing. In many countries like Germany the parents will do anything to keep their children at home as long as possible. In Germany, when a girl marries, she usually stays with her parents and her husband moves in with them. In some cases, they take up residence nearby. When children arrive the grandparents play a big role in their upbringing. In more traditional cultures the family is the foundation of society.

I told my daughter that she is always aloud to stay with us. She knows she has to follow the house rules and have a job to support herself but she can stay until she is able to have a place of her own, or gets married. However, I do believe there is a time to move out and stay out. My sister still lives with my mother and she is 41 years old.

Hey, my mom wants to kick me out the day I turn 18. The legal system isn’t going to do anything if she does and she wants to; it sounds like a good deal to her.

Maybe to teach them responsibility? My sister is 20 and still lives at home. She goes to school and has a full time job, though.

WELL NOT ALL PARENTS KICK THERE KIDS OUT AT 18. IHAVE A 17 YR OLD AND ALTHOUGH HE CAN BE A PAIN IN MY *** I WOULD NOT KICK HIM OUT. HE DOES THOUGH HAVE TO SHOW SOME TYPE OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIMSELF. I KNOW IT IS TOUGH OUT THERE BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO PUT IN THE EFFORT.
