That is like asking which is the best video card.
It depends upon which moment. There are quite a few very good anti-virus programs. Some are free and others charge monthly fees.
It is very common in this industry to have similar products from different manufacturers leap frog each other with one "winning out" this month over the other.
It is also very common in the computer industry for people to have an almost reverent or religious fervor about products they use.
Here are some popular comparison sites.

In the end only you can make the decision that is best for you that takes into account your finances, how much protection you need etc.
I hope this has helped

A quick Google search leads to http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,124475,00.asp
Another (not rated ?) is e-Trust from ca.
Has a free 1 year trial and been testing now for 4 months and has performed flawlessly.
My long time friend will always be Norton, but that wasn't your question....haha
Edit to Blesson J.M, bad plan running 2 at the same time.

AVG, why best? Because it's free and doesn't have a lot of bloatware in it and it updates daily and is user friendly. Good luck!
