My little weiner dog got a hold of about 8-10 chicken wing bones and ate them all. I'm really worried about her because I know chicken bones are bad for dogs because of the splintering. What should I do...Is there anything I can do to help her?

no, she doesn't appear to be sick at all and no, she didn't choke on them. Just scarfed them down and we realized it because the bones were on the plate and she jumped on the table and they were gone when we saw her up there.

If she is going to have a problem with them, it would be most noticeable within the first hour. Give her a bit of mineral oil , it will help her to pass them easier. My dog tends to get a little constipated from eating too many bones.

Is the dog sick? If it didn't choke on the bones while eating them, then its past the first concern
second, watch for bloated gut, or blood in the stool, if the dog seemes to be having ANY problems get it to an emergencey vet ASAP! bones can splinter and perforate the gut. If the dog starts passing bones, just watch to make sure there is no damage occuring. Some animals will eat chicken bones and be just fine, so if your dog is not having any problems I would just keep a close eye on her, and take her if she needs it.

I think the main concern with chicken bones and dogs is choking on them. Keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't have any trouble using the restroom for the next few days. You could also just call the vet to find out if there is any reason to be concerned (that's what I'd do and is really the best way to get good answers to questions about animals).

This is from the pet safety page, concerning dogs who eat bones or glass::
Use cotton balls that are made of 100% cotton. Do not use "cosmetic puffs" as these are made from man-made fibers and do not work like the 100% cotton ones.

Next, get a quart of Half & Half coffee creamer.

THE PROCEDURE: Help dog who ate chicken bone. Dog ate chicken bone

Tear the cotton balls into small pieces and soak them in the Half & Half.

Feed the cotton balls to your dog one at a time.

Ten pounds and under - Feed 2 cotton balls.
Ten to fifty pounds- Feed 3-5 cotton balls.
Fifty pounds and over- Feed 5-7 cotton balls.

Dogs seem to really like these strange "treats' and eat them readily. As the cotton works its way through the digestive tract it will attract all the glass pieces and wrap itself around them. Even the teeniest shards
of glass will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibers and the cotton will protect the intestines from damage by the glass.

Your dog's stools will look strange for a few days but should you see fresh blood or a tarry appearance to the stool, rush your dog to the vet for a checkup but in most cases, the dogs will be just fine. The cotton always comes out with the object safely embedded

Too late now to do anything but wait....the big concern now is GI upset and obstruction. This will usually not show signs until about 3-4 days from now. If she stops eating, vomiting, diarrea etc go to Vet immediately. It would be a good idea now to have a vet take an xray to see how many pieces of bones there are and where they are.

Bread does nothing.

You don't say when this happened. If she ate them a while ago and doesn't seem to be in any distress, I wouldn't worry. Lots of dogs eat bones without any problem, but it's unwise to actually give them cooked bones. If she seems to be suffering or having trouble of any sort, take her straight to the vet. She'll probably be OK though, Don't panic, just be careful she can't worry you again! :)

You should feed her about half a cup of oleo....Margarine, if you will, at one sitting, it will act as a "lubricant and a softener and she will have a much easier time "getting rid of it" then, you should take better care of your leftovers and your dog!

take her to a vet. i'd say don't wait for signs of discomfort 'cause you never know when it could be too late. just to be extra safe, get professional advice ASAP.
