My husband is Polish and we attended a Polish language church. Generally the priest is bilingual, but the summer I had a major surgery, there was a summer replacement - a totally novice young kid fresh out of the seminary in Poland who didn't speak a word of English.
Backtracking ...... getting ready for that surgery, everything went haywire. Lab tests sent to the wrong place, scheduling snafus, etc etc.
As I went "under" the anesthesia I expected to wake up in my room, looking pale yet pretty in a pink frilly bed jacket... Instead I woke up in ICU, with this poor kid looking desperately weak trying to give me the last rites- and neither of us able to understand the other. At the time, I remember it was hilarious to me... the master example of Murphy's law. (BTW-- a few minutes later my sister walked into the room and immediately passed out on the floor.)

When, at age 43, I became pregnant (quite by accident) with my first (and only) child.
He had to have a few laughs over that since I never, never, never wanted to have kids. Of course, once I had my son I fell madly in love with him. Just goes to show you.............
