Alright, there's something I'm just not following. All my life I thought religions like Catholocism were considered Christian. For most of my life I thought the same of Mormons. Recently I've heard from members of various similar sects that no, Catholics/Mormons/Potestants/etc. are not Christian.
Can someone explain to me what the prerequisits are to be a true Christian sect or if these people who tell me this are just ignorant?

In response to one of my answers, the "Latter Day Saint" was named Joseph Smith. I know quite a bit about Mormons.
Mormons didn't really move Jesus aside, they just said that there were prophecies stating that he will reincarnate in N. America.
Most of you support that Catholics are Christian, but to those of you who don't: how can you deny that a group of people is Christian when they adorn their bedrooms and necks with depictions of Jesus Christ crucified? Or to those who say Mormons aren't Christian, the full name of their church does include his name (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints).
I'm under the impression that all these sects--even the most removed--are in essense Christian and have simply developed slightly varied ways to express it. I just wanted to know if there was an official set of standards.

I mostly hear this kind of noise from the "born-again" group. This group of religions (grouped together for convenience, but notably not of a unified belief system), tends to claim that pretty much any form of belief system (regardless of their Christian beliefs or moral systems) other than their own are not Christian or worship some "other Jesus", and do so in an inflammatory manner. I don't know why they need to be so antagonistic, but, hey, whatever. I went and looked it up on wikipedia, which pretty clearly states that a Christian is one who believes in Jesus as a Christ, and attempts to follow His teachings -- even Catholics and Mormons.

Christians are followers of Jesus Christ. The question to ask to determine if a group is truly Christian is what do they teach about Jesus. In a nutshell Jesus is God, the only begotten Son of God, the second member of the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). He came to earth, took on human flesh, died for the sins of the world, rose again on the third day and all who believe in Him will be saved.

Now if anyone teaches anything different they are not Christians.

Most Catholics do believe this however Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses teach something completely different about Jesus. Protestants are Christians who are seperate from the Roman Catholic Church. Although some protestant groups have gotten away from this basic belief in who Jesus is most still believe what I have written about Jesus to be true as the Bible teaches it.

I hope that helps.

Christianity started with the Catholic church. Catholic means universal. People started to disagree on the interpretation of the Bible, which led to the Catholic church on one side, and the Evangelical Church on the other side. Evangelical churches consist of the Baptist, Methodist, Church of Christ, Nazarenes, etc..Jesus is still the center of the two bodies of faith, it is just looked at differently.Who is right? Both, so long as Jesus is at the center of it all. The Mormons came along in the 19th century, and added to the Bible, a whole new book. This book was written by a latter day saint, his name escapes me. Mormons are generally not considered Christian, because it moves Jesus from the center. I hope a Mormon will answer, to shed a little more light on this for you.. Jesus as your Lord and Savior is both Catholic and Evangelical. Is it possible to believe in Jesus and not go to church, sure, but Jesus did not want you to be a hermit. Jesus shows this with his disciples. Jesus wants you to fellowship with others and spread the Gospel.

The Mother of ALL Christian churches is the Catholic church. This church, in the 3rd and 4th century, transcribed and sorted scrolls to create what we call the "Bible." Until AD350, or so, there was NO such thing as a bible. Luther was the first to break from the Catholic Church due to corruption within the Church. Since then, several sects with minor differences in dogma have risen, many so distorted from what would be considered true Christianity that they are barely recognizable. The real Christian churches are NOT fundamental in nature, do NOT believe the Bible as any thing but a guide and myth with metaphoric writing. It would seem that in the last 75 years, many "religious" men have taken it upon themselves to translate the bible to their own agenda...keep in mind that all these "pastors" require a strong following to make a living...MONEY! They take short cuts in preaching hate, for hate is a great human unifier...unfortunately. This is NOTHING new, it has been going on for centuries. It would seem that more people have been murdered in the name of God than for all other reasons combines. All this, in spite of the 5th Commandment, "Thy shalt Not Kill." Interesting how so many exceptions to God's word can be found by those who need to rationalize their twisted view of mankind and the world....in fact, it is sinful in God's eyes, if we are to believe any of the Bible.

This is a question I will try to answer for you, to my limited knowledge.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God, sent by God to save us from eternal damnation, if we ask forgiveness for our sins, and follow Jesus' teachings, doing our very best to not sin again.. He died on the cross so that we wouldn't have to pay that penalty ourselves, by taking on OUR sins and for a moment being seperated from God. thus sparing us an eternity in hell, which is what Hell is, eternity without God
God understands that we are human, and that is why there is no limit to his forgiveness, if our repentence is genuine.

This gift of life is offered to every single person on this planet, all they have to do is accept it.

Only people who follow these teaching can be called Christians.

I don't even call Christianity a religion, it is a way of life.

As far as I know catholics also follow Jesus' teachings, but also have a lot of things added to their religious practices that don't have any biblical foundation.

I don't think mormons worship Jesus as the Son of God, so aren't Christians.

Christians are followers of Jesus Christ who adhere to his teachings as prescribed in the Christian Bible.

There are many different doctrines under the heading of Christian.
Catholic, Protestant, Jehovah Witness, Mormon, etc. In order to determine the true from the not true Christian it is necessary to study the various doctrines. If a doctrine deviates from the scriptures or eliminates or disagrees with the scriptures then there is cause for doubt as to the authenticity of their total devotion to the scripture. But that is not for us to judge. (Jesus explains this in the parable of the wheat and tares) It is only Jesus who can judge the right and wrong of the various faiths. It is our responsibility to seek the truth.

Basically, a Christian is one who believes in Jesus Christ.

And the person who told you that Catholics and Protestants aren't Christians is wrong. Perhaps you could ask those members of "sects" for their definition of a Christian.

The church is within every denomination throughout the entire world.

We who are in Christ Jesus have become a “new” creature (Gal.6:15, 2 Cor.5:17 below). We have BECOME the church of God (1 Cor.10:32, 1 Cor.1:2, 1 Cor.15:9, Gal.1:13 below), Jesus’ living body (Col.1:24 below).

No matter which denomination one attends, the living body of Christ is there.

Gal.6:15For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature (2 Cor.5:17 below).

2 Cor.5:17Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature (Gal.6:15 above): old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

1 Cor.10:32Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

Col.1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for His body's sake, which IS the church (1 Cor.10:32 above).

1 Cor.1:2Unto the church of God (1 Cor.10:32 above) which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's:

1 Cor.15:9For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God (1 Cor.10:32 above).

Gal.1:13For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God (1 Cor.10:32 above), and wasted it:

Eph.2:16And that he might RECONCILE BOTH (Jews and Gentiles) unto God IN ONE BODY (the church of God - 1 Cor.10:32 above) by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

Dont allow everyone to complicate things. Being a true Christian is simply believing and having a relationship with Jesus (God). He died for our sins to save us! Remember religion is not relationship.
