It's stealing. The owner might have kept forgetting to take it with them, or maybe she hasn't noticed that she forgot it there or she might be using it for a part of the day and leaving it there when she's not wearing it. You shouldn't have taken it.

It's not finders keepers. It was in the staff room, the place where the staff keeps their things. I'd expect my things to be left alone in there. Taking anything from there that doesn't belong to you is theft!

How would you feel if you forgot something in the staff room and when you realized it and went to get it it was gone?

Thanks for interpreting Answer Annie, I was thinking, "When did jumpers get cute again?" I didn't know the British called a sweater a jumper. What's that about?

As far as the question goes, if you have to ask if what you're doing is wrong, it usually is. You could post a sign that you found a "jumper" in the staff room and you're holding it for the owner. Then after say, two weeks if no one has answered then take down the sign and wear your new garment. I'd wash it first though.

Good luck.

Ethically, you know this is wrong. I' very sure your mother would be very disappointed in you having turned into a thief.
Take it back and turn it into your Human Resources office as a lost and found item. If it is NOT collected in a month or so, ask if you may have it. Then you can wear it with a clear conscience.
For you Americans a Jumper is a sweater.

I don't care how you look at it , it is not yours, you did not pay for it, and you took it anyway. You tell me if you behaved ethically. You are looking for approval for what you have done. The true test of whether you really can justify your actions is to wear it to work several times. If you are queezy about doing this, take it back and leave it where you found it. You do NOT need to steal a jumper..surely you can afford one of your own.

yes it is stealing ... but ...

put a note on the staff bulletin board (or in the lunch room)

{ Missing a cute Jumper? see ilovegerling }

If no one asks you about it for long enough then you can keep it as unclaimed.
Meanwhile .. check who is on holiday or vacation or who brought in their girlfriend to have a little fun on the lunchroom table...

Maybe you should've talked to your boss. Are you friends with any of your co-workers? Well, don't plan on having them see you in the jumper, they might now the owner. And we'll do you usually steel things that aren't yours?

Do you have a lost and found at your work? You should give a person 3 months to claim it... if no one claims it then its yours! thats only fair... would you want someone to take something of yours?

well it had to have been someone's...you should probably have, like, the receptionist make an announcement over the intercom on monday about a missing jumper, then if no one claims it, you can probably have it...

Rather put up a sign saying "found" etc... and then say that if nobody claims it within a week, it will be taken
