Yes, the female does have a blood tinged discharge for about 1 week, every 6 months, followed by a period of 7 days or so that she can breed, and another week or so that she still attracts males, but won't breed....So, the whole estrus cycle lasts roughly 3 weeks.
During this time, she will often be moody, stubborn and disobedient, and will try to run away.

No. A period is when a woman's body has given up on reproducing for the month and discards the lining of the uterus.
A dog will bleed when she's in heat and ready to reproduce.

Yes. It is called a "heat". The dog is said to be "in heat".
Depending upon the breed, it can happen once or twice a year.

i really dont know.. i have only had male dogs becasue im in a family of 6 and my dads the only guy so he wanted a male dog becasue hes out numbered with girls..haha
