18 months is very young.

Look for the following signs:
1. Knows how to pull pants up and down.
2. Shows an interest when others use the toilet.
3. Likes to keep hands and body clean.
4. Indicates by words or expression when he needs to make something.
5. Stays dry for a few hours at a time.

If he has the above signs, you can toilet train him as follows:
1. Read him books about potty, like "Once Upon a Potty". Or show him videos like "Potty Time with Bear" from Bear in the Big Blue House.
2. Show him the potty and explain what it is for.
3. Try to determine what his pee and poo schedule is. When it is about time for his to make something, sit him down on the potty and read to him for 10 minutes or so. Hopefully, something will come out. If not, then try again later.
4. When he poos, dump the poo in the potty, so he can see where it goes. (Then get rid of the poo.)
5. Take him with you when you go to toilet (father), so he can see what to do.
6. When he succeeds, give him a sticker.

If a week or so passes and there is no success, then wait a few months and try again.

My kids were only ready at 3 years old! Horrible, huh?

usually children start grasping potty training idea around 22- 30 months.... so 18 months might be a little too soon... but heres what i do... well i work as a nanny and it worked with the little girl i use to watch... she would cross her legs and like you know do the little potty dance and right at that moment i would take her and sit her on the potty and she would go in there... after awhile she went by herself.hope that helps

I never found if very hard to potty train my girls. I just took them to the bathroom with me. It should be even easier with boys, you can make up games like "shoot the pea". Main thing is patients, don't make a big deal out of an accident. And don't let other people tell you your kid has to be toilet trained by a certain age.

15 min after you feed him put him on the potty with a book at hand and sit there with him. When you use the potty praise him like he just found the winning lotto ticket.

you just sit them on the pot close to the time you think they normally go. you should pretty much know that by diaper changes. you sit there and wait on them and dont worry it may take a while but when they do go you make a big deal out of them doing it right and every time your in training you make as big of deal. I would wait until 2 or 2 1/2 years before I tried.
