You don't. It's up to him. Best you can do is offer to go with him if he wants to go to Alcoholics Anonymous. Be his friend, but don't lie for him or cover up for him. If he asks you to do something like that to help cover up his alcohol problem, refuse him, but tell him why. The sooner he recognizes that it is a problem, the sooner he can do something (namely, join AA) to fight back. It's a question of who is to be in charge of his life, himself or a bottle.

You can't. Drinking to numb yourself is a symptom of an overload of some kind of stressor. Until you deal with the problems and find a way to alleviate stress and anxiety, she will only sneak drink.

Get your friend to a good relative or friend you trust. A professional would be better. There is probably something in your friends life that they feel "out of control". Once they find some sense of controld in their life, the need for numbing will lessen.

This will be a lifelong problem to deal with. Help your friend help themselves.

The truth is, you can't. But talk to your friend and express that you're worried. If it's really out of hand, you can try an intervention.

Your friend has to decide for himself/herself. Your encouragment is good. Talk to his/her friends and family and get together. Maybe you all need to get together.
