Why Do Dogs Lick You Whenever You Put You're Hand In Front Of Their Face?

It is a sign of affection, and of respect.
Dogs live in a world governed by rank and status. They are pack animals, and recognize status, or rank, within the pack.
The lower ranking members of the pack lick, or "groom," the higher-ranking members. They do it to forge bonds between pack members, and for security and comfort.
Higher ranking pack members groom subordinates to confer approval and acceptance.
Dogs lick you because they enjoy doing so, and because they love you.

It's a sign of affection and also the dogs way of gaining information. Most anything you put in front of your dogs nose will be licked. A dogs tongue and mouth are like our hands. It's their way of feeling and touching. That's the affection part, touching you.

I would say all of the above have validity - affection is key, salt is worthwhile, grooming instincts - but let me add this.. I think my dog also is checking out what I might have been eating while off the premises, just in case I brought some home for him too.. A taste of what might be things to come..

Dogs need salt in their diet and their is sweat on your hands or anywhere on your body. Besides that they lick you because they like you, it is a sign of affection.

Wild dog puppies will lick an adult that returns to the den so that the adult dog will regurgitate food for them.
