also, if as soon as your ear gets infected you just take the earring out, will that heal it or is further treatment necessary?

Yep, gangrene is a bacterial infection. Usually it is an extreme form caused by not taking care a wound and letting the infection get out of hand. Any time the skin is pierced, there is a risk of gangrene. A very small risk. Use rubbing alchol, and antibacterial ointment like Neosporin until it heals and it should be fine.

Not quite sure about it being gangrene, but it can cause blood poisoning and that is not very good at all.

Gangrene is necrosis and subsequent decay of body tissues caused by infection or thrombosis or lack of blood flow. It is usually the result of critically insufficient blood supply sometimes caused by injury and subsequent contamination with bacteria. This condition is most common in the extremities. The best of all possible treatments is revascularization (restoration) of the affected organ, which can reverse some of the effects of necrosis and allow healing. Depending on the extent of tissue loss and location, treatment other than revascularization runs the gamut from allowing digits to auto-amputate (fall off), debridement and local care, to amputation, the removal of infected necrotic tissues.

technically speaking, yes...but very unlikely. If this is happening to you, please see a doctor to get oral antibiotics as well as topical. I am sure you will be fine. Take care.
