If you were happy, you wouldn't be asking for anything

On the other hand, us Atheists are happy because we haven't been hyped up to believe some bullshit.

If you have nothing to lose, there's no reason to be depressed.

Even happy people have problems. And prayer isn't only asking for help, sometimes it is just talking to God about your day or thanking God for your blessings.

"If Christians are happy, why are they always asking God for help? If you were happy, you wouldn't be asking for anything"

Because it's possible to be happier. It's natural for humans to want more and more even though they are happy. Even though I'm happy with my Corvette, I'd be even happier with a Lamborghini.

"On the other hand, us Atheists are happy because we haven't been hyped up to believe some bullshit."

I don't see your point. Christians aren't unhappy because God isn't giving them what they pray for, they understand that God knows all. If it's not time for them to have something then they understand that. Why would they be unhappy about it? There are unhappy atheists and unhappy Christians, as well as happy atheists and happy Christians.

"If you have nothing to lose, there's no reason to be depressed."

I disagree, I think the person with nothing is probably very depressed.

I'm an atheist too but I don't think you have much of an argument here.

Hmmm. I have never read any command in the bible that says Christians are to be happy all the time. However, the Word does say this... "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33. Being a Christian doesn't exclude me from difficulty or distress, nor does it exclude me from emotional suffering. Paul, an apostle of Christ, encountered trouble so bad he said that he and his companions "had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God..." Regardless of what happens, I am assured that the Lord will get me through everything I encounter and come out a better person, in Him, for it.

Also, "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you." Luke 11:9

God is my provider and He invites me to ask Him to supply all my needs...and I do, especially through hard times when I need strength and comfort. His promises are true. I would rather have what I now possess with the Lord and be thought of as weak and foolish by you than go back to what my life was like before I encountered God. I count all things as loss to have the Lord...even my dignity.

It's more a matter of accepting life's limitations.

Life is a poker game of "Texas hold 'em", one hand, no draws and nothing wild. No matter how much you pray, it's not going to change the cards in your hand or on the table. All you can do is play it to the best of your ability.

Life is the dealer, you take what you're dealt and you do the best you can with it. I have two pair and played it like a full house and won. Some people get four of a kind and fold.

"PRAY, v. To ask that the laws of the universe be annulled in behalf of a single petitioner confessedly unworthy."
- Ambrose Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary"

I must say you have asked a good question there. That's a new one on me. If you have no acknowledge about God I see how you find this hard to understand. Since you have asked, I can only give you my personally opinion as a Christian. We pray because that's what God wanted us to do. I am happy, happy with my life, and happy with my life that I have with God. I do pray to God asking for things..asking for HIS will be done, asking Him to work in me to help others know Him as I know Him, I ask for forgiveness as he asked us to do in bible when I have done wrong. No one is perfect, not even Christians and He knows that...In the bible there are many chapters that talk about prayers, James being one of them. But prayers are not all about asking for things...they are also to praise God, to thank Him for what He has done and all that He has given us. so to answer your question short- we pray because God asked us to.
now to give you things to ponder....if you as an atheist was TRULY happy being an Atheist...would you be seeking these questions? Wouldn't you be happy since u think it was bs...just maybe someone is tugging on your heart, maybe He is trying to reach you...If you feel you need more answers open the bible, I mean it is only a book..what harm comes from reading?

and Matt J that was a REALLY good point..take your problems to the creator...I loved your example..simple and true...

Christians are not always happy. We have problems too. But we have hope and a promise of guidence. There is great comfort knowing that and so in hard times we can still remain positive knowing that in everything, good and bad, there is purpose. We just don't always know it because and humans it is hard to see the big picture untill after the fact. Read the poem "footprints" it will give you a good sense of that.

not all christians are happy, not all atheists are happy either

just because you need help, does not mean you are not happy

that logic is like saying dont try because you have the possibility of failure--if you have nothing to lose you would be depressed for this very reason: you have nothing

You're free to believe what you want, but the fact is that the universe has an origin. It boils down to if God created it, or did the universe magically pop into existence from "nothing", and without any help.

1. God says that He will test those who believe ....
2. Happiness ... for one who believes in God, does not mean a life without struggle...but instead ....a life of overcoming adversity!
3. It takes an uncommonly blank ,shallow and stupid person to think that this complex and precision design of humans and other organisms, and this exquisitely designed ever-unfolding universe....JUST HAPPENED !!!!!! No Conclusion could be more scientifically inept and inaccurate !
4. Happiness...does not mean to live this life without RESPONSIBILITY !
5. Living life without Responsibility is just a cop-out for being moronic and mindless !

Your logic is flawed... you can be happy and still need things... I'm happy but I still need air to breathe and money to buy food and a good job to get money and a good education to get a good job and a good mind to do well in school... God can help me with those things... an Atheist has no one to help him/her except him/herself...

It's funny how a Christian isn't allowed to bash the beliefs of anyone else but an Athiest can bash Christianity... You have your beliefs and Christians have theirs... who are you to judge what they believe???
