I always thought that ear piercings getting infected wasn't that big of a deal, that you can clean them & they'll get better or just take them out & let them close up. But i'm hearing people being like OMGZZ I HOPE MY PIERCING ISN'T INFECTED OMGZ and people saying they need to go to the doctor's & get antibiotics & freaking out? are infections really THAT dangerous? what's the worst that can happen?

Yes, it can be. The infection can spread into surrounding tissue [get bigger], it can get into your blood stream, causing a systemic infection[all over your body], make you VERYsick, and yes, you could die.
And the kind of infection can be bad too. Some germs do not have antibiotics that kill them, can't just pop pills for them, you would have to have IV [through the vein] antibiotics.
Don't you know you could get hepatitis from piercings? That is liver disease. Some kinds are reversible, some not. A person can't live without a liver. Can get it from tatoos, also.
So, if it is just a little red, and just got that way, clean the area really good, soap and water with a clean washcloth, q-tip, or bandage[and wash your hands first] or peroxide, and find some over the counter [buy a new tube] triple antibiotic cream, and follow the directions. If there is colorful drainage, pus, if it is really red and swollen, and/or has been so for awhile, call your doctor. And if the piercing is in your tongue, call the doctor first. You can't put the antibiotic cream in your mouth.
The danger in an ear piercing is that you ear is really close to your brain, it is a short trip for the germs to get there. There is a bone near your ear called the mastoid. It picks up infection from your teeth, and around your ear. Not good to have a infection there.
One question, are your glands on the side of the ear infection swollen? Put a finger just below your ear along the jaw line, and press, moving down the jaw a little, and press again. Repeat. Is it very sore? If it is, tell the doctor.
So stop freaking out, chances are with a good cleaning and some antibiotic, it will go away. Have a responsible adult look at it, not one who easily freaks,[if they sayOMGZZ get another adult] and have them squeeze on it GENTLY. If it drains anything besides a liitle clear fluid, call a doctor and talk to him/her.Hey, all the answers before mine are good. Listen to them.

That is quite a myth. Infections from piercings will have the same negative effects anywhere on the face. Yes, there are some dangers in eyebrow piercings that you need to be careful of when you make the decision to get the piercing done. You can also contract diseases if the place you get the piercing from is not very sanitary. The most common problem, however, is an infection.

Infections that are out of control (meaning your own body can't fight it off and heal itself) and need antibiotics can be very dangerous.
The infection can cause anything from mild scarring, to major disfigurement where the infection was to death in extreme cases.
An infection is nothing to ignore. Its best to keep the piercing very clean and follow care instructions to the letter, then you shouldn't have any problem.

ANY infection is dangerous to your health.

There was this girl once who had her nose piercing infected. Not only was it gross, when it did clear up, there was a scar.

If an infection continues untreated, you can develop a fever and sad to say...death can occur.

yes you can get infections and yes, they may need docters help. Also your piercing may reject. which means that they may just slowly move to the side of the skin and come off...think about it like your ear ring being ripped out during a game but slower...

Gangreen (sp?), if hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol are not working you need to get to a doctor and get some antibiotics, otherwise be prepared for body parts to start falling off, in the worst case scenario
