The acronym stands for American Sign Language....... It is taught at the Gallaudette School as an aid to the hearing-impaired, with variations of 'dialect' extending across the country, and is meant to facilitate communication through hand gestures.

In chat language ASL means Age Sex Location. Abbreviation used to quickly ask the person you are chatting with.

Hi Devon - I'm still learning American Sign Language, even though I had several courses in it. It's very fulfilling, and "makes more sense" to me than signing exact English. Although I decided to learn ASL before I decided to go into nursing, I found out there are over 60,000 deaf people just in the San Fernando Valley. ASL is very expressive, incorporating facial expression and signing (as you know), and I'll keep taking classes until I can interpret speeches, classes, sermons, etc. One of my ASL teachers was in Jerry Maguire in the "elevator scene: you make me complete". Thanks for asking.

(last year nursing student)

I used to be able to understand ASL well enough to follow a conversation, but I lost it after the person that I practiced with moved. Shame.
