... without calling Microsoft (takes too long!). Anybody know a website where I can enter a key to check ?

Call Microsoft.

If there is a key sticker on the software or on the computer, it is definitely valid. If it's not valid, which is unlikely, there are sites out there that have keys that will work.

to find out about that.
or
go to http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx
to find out your Windows XP certificate key is valid or not.

You have to use IE 6.0 or above to do that
