We have adopted a couple of stray kittens. They at first seemed to have a cold in both eyes or possible irratation due to fly bites. However, it seems that in one of the kittens it has gotten worse. They always seem to have tears or puss like substance coming from there eyes. One of the kittens today had one eye matted shut that I forced opened to look into so I could see what was going on in that area and there seemed to be some puss. It is almost like they have "pink eye". I can't afford to take them to the vet right now since I just started this new job but will if I have no other way to make them well. Does anyone have an idea of what this can be? It does seem to be contagious since two of them had it first then a week later the other had it. They were found in two different places so they are not from the same mother. I thought about maybe using some type of antibiotic cream like Neosporen, would this hurt them? Please help!

Do not put anything in the kittens eyes that isn't FOR kitten eyes!!! Neosporin is a TOPICAL antibiotic ointment....topical means for the skin. It usually says on the tube DO NOT PUT IN THE EYES!!!!
Kittens should get vaccinated and that could prevent some of the viruses that they get. The kittens have some kind of upper respiratory infection and need treatment. Usually they need oral antibiotics as well as opth. ointment or drops. Yes it is contagous to other cats and kittens. You need to get them treated!!! Kittens can go blind if not treated in time!!!

Never force an eye open!!!No No No, the only thing you can use is distilled water in a very clean thing to use to flush the eye out with, a baby nasal aspirator works well. Distilled water is because there are no harmful mineral deposits in it. Also, if there is puss, that means infection, it needs vet assistance, an antibiotic. Also, there could be too many things wrong with them including distemper. If you can't afford the vet, just keep the eyes as clean as you can using distilled water and a clean cloth and wipe that stuff off gently!! Thanks for helping the kittens. Do not use any over the counter medications made for humans in those eyes, you can cause them to bleed or blind them. call the vets office an explain this to them I bet they can give you a prescribed oitment from their office. If artificial tears is mentioned, don't even bother looking for it, you will only find the stuff made for humans and contacts, it has boric acid i it and other harmful stuff, They are talking about purified water, distilled water, not dannon or anything else. But if money is an issue, a soft clean warm or slightly cool cloth to clean aroung the eyes, careful not to scratch the eyes with the cloth or towel. Do not use saline solution or anything like that. I just went through this with my cat/s eye that was irritated due to him getting into fiberglass insulation!

If the cats are strays they would be difficult to handle and apply any sort of medication to their eyes. The only way you could do this is to capture them and wind them up in a towel and they apply the stuff. It truly depends on what the problem is with the cats eyes. If its conjunctivitis (an irritation or infection of the conjunctiva or the inner eye membrane) which is quite common with strays. Then its best to apply an antibiotic salve like tetracycline to the eyes. They are small tubes of ointment that the Vet would sell to you for twelve to twenty dollars. The only other way to get around this is to try to clean around the eyes with baby wipes or a warm cloth to remove the secretions from the eye. Sometimes artificial tears meant for humans have been known to help. Applying anything to a stray cats eyes will be difficult, they do not like to be handled very much. I've done it, but catching a stray twice a day and cleaning its eyes is quite hard unless you are very committed. Good luck to you and thanks for caring for a stray, its people like you that make this world a better place to live in (:)

another simple home remedy that will not cure but will help them feel a little more comfortable until you can get to a shelter (and I agree you need too) is to clean their eyes with warm baby shampoo on a washcloth a couple times a day. This won't irritate them but it will remove the crusts. I did this for my feral kitties.

NO NEosprin, not for eys, pink eye they use euthromyacin ( sp?)
ointment.
Clean them with warm water on a towel several times a day till you can get to vet. Use different one for each eye so you dont spread it.
Call the animal shelter and see if they can refer you to a lo cost vet.
I would definietly call a vet though, they may have more of a sickness going on.

Ok , for the record, the answer about the trash bag was uncalled for and cruel!!! but maybe you could try saline solution ONLY until you can get them to a vet. It sounds like upper respiratory infection.

The first answerer has it right. I only want to add that the SPCA and your local animal control might be able to help with vet bills. It is worth calling and asking. All they can say is no.
Ask if they know of any vet that will do payments.
Good Luck.
