My husband likes to wear his hair collar length, but when it gets a little too long and straggly, he goes to the hairdresser. Unfortunately, they always give him a short back and sides which makes him look like a dork, and it takes 6 months for his hair to grow back to the length he prefers.

He's tried asking for a trim, for it to be tidied up, for it to be layered and styled, for them to just take 2 inches off the ends at the back, and for them to just keep it the same way, but whatever he says, it ends in him getting a short back and sides. It doesn't seem to make any difference going to a different person or a different salon.

What is the magic formula for getting a hairdresser to let you keep your chosen hair length and style? It's got to the point where he is now refusing to get his hair cut at all, and it will soon look like a haystack.

You should do it for him.

I encountered the same problem when I went to salons to get my hair cut. I wanted it short and choppy, and they would never do it enough, and it looked stupid, and costed wayyyy too much money. It's cause hair stylists are scared of ******* up and going "too far" and you getting pissed off.

You should cut it for him. If you mess it up, just take him to the hair stylist again, you have nothing to lose.

I'm a girl, but I totally understand where your husband is coming from. Know matter what I have told stylist they don't listen and even cut my hair haphazardly. My hair is so jacked up right now, I'm afraid to have it cut again. You can practically go bald trying to find a stylist that will listen. Eventually I need to go have this mess fixed, so here is what I've been doing, you or your husband can try this to. For your husband, every time he sees a guy with his hair cut the way he wants his, go up to him and ask where and who does their hair, men and women both like compliments so I don't think it will be a problem. Keep asking people who they go to and the name that comes up the most, try them out. Look for men that have the same hair type as your husband too, that might help some. Good luck, I hope this helps. I'm desperate so I'm gunna try it. P.S. I've done the whole thing where you have the hair stylist repeat back how you want it, they repeat back and then do as they please. I'm not bashing all stylist because even after my hair disaster I know there are good one's out there.

Show the stylist a guideline for the front on forehead, sides at ears. and middle of nape and then explain further if you want layered cut, faded, blended, etc. A picture of him with a good cut would be helpful. Find a stylist that pleases you and stay with them. A stylist will usually get better with each appointment as they get more familiar with your hair and style choice. Also, get cuts when needed and do not wait too long between cuts as it makes the change appear too drastic.

Hmmm, try taking a photo of your husband when he's got his style to a length he likes, then using the photos to guide the hairstylist. In a pinch, you could use celebrity photos as a guide too. Tell the stylist directly and emphatically that too short will mean No Tip. Once he finds a stylist who doesn't go crazy with the back and sides, he should make all of his appointments with him/her. It may take some time to find one, but it's worth the effort. Oh, and less experienced stylists are more prone to "cookie cutter" styles. Avoid them. Good luck!

Find a good picture of the hair cut that he likes &, going to the same hairdresser everytime might help. Laminate the picture and have him take it with him everytime he gets it cut.

When my hair gets long and I want to keep it that way I have to be VERY specific about it. Usually the sylist will try to pressure me or make a smartaleck remark (my hair is very wild and curly). One thing I know for sure is that if you want to keep your hair longer....DO NOT go to an old fashioned barber shop...they will scalp your hippie a.ss no matter what.

I can only say...be VERY specific. Say 'don't cut this area at all....just a trim here and here'.

He needs to go in to the hair dresser & tell them what happens to his hair everytime he gets it cut & that he does not want that to happen! Then he needs to make sure they understand what has been going wrong & specify to take small ammounts off at a time untill he is comfortable with the length taken off. You can cut it off but not put it back on is what he needs to emphasise to them.
Good luck.

You do it. Not even lying. You know how he likes it, go out and get some brand new scizzors and see what you can do. Don't be scared it is so hard to mess up. Or, try going somewhere else. the higher end salons do cuts like that ll of the time because you get your money's worth.

Does he keep going to the same hairdresser? Maybe you should cut it at home.
