I dont' think there's one person (singular) that occupies that position. Robotics requires too many different skill sets. One person (or more likely team of engineers) might be tops as far as manual dexterity, another mobility, another group might be great at visual acuity.

One person who is pretty famous in the field of robotics is Red Whittaker. He is a professor at Carnegie Mellon.

Although his team didn't win the DARPA Grand Challenge last year, his two teams finished 2nd and 3rd I believe.

The previous answerer is correct, there aren't any particular people who represent the entire field of robotics. At this point robotics is a very large field.

I'll nominate Ray Kurzweil as a strong contender. His inventions include a flatbed scanner that can read any type font and read it out in continuous speech that doesn't sound like a machine, so it can read newspapers and books to the blind. He's also done more than most to popularise robotics technology.
