In 1952 Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins wrote the anthem that would cause a debate among Smokey enthusiasts for the next several decades. In order to maintain the correct rhythm, the writers added a "the" between "Smokey" and "Bear." As testament to the song's popularity, Smokey Bear became known as "Smokey The Bear" to many adoring fans, but in actuality his name never changed, and he is still known correctly as Smokey Bear.

I disagree that it's "the". All of his biographies refer to him as Smokey Bear. That was indeed the name given him in 1945 (see sources). Now you may refer to "John Smith" as "John the Smith" if John Smith also happens to be a Smith by profession, and his middle name is by no means "The". Also note that "the" is not capitalized in Smokey the Bear, suggesting it is not a proper name.
I'm sorry, but Smokey hasn't got a middle name.

He has no middle name.
It is just Smokey Bear.
The old time singer Gene Autry added "the" to the name when he wrote the song "Smokey The Bear", somewhere around 1950 or so,
Now everybody thinks that his name is Smokey THE Bear.
