I have just read some of the responses and I feel the need to respond to a particular student. I do not think education has nothing to do with being a waitress. BTW I used to have to take a shuttle bus and yes I would slip him a few $$.

Ok. Where I live and I am a server I make $2.15 an hour plus tip. Sometimes you get people in there that don't what they are doing after a few drinks and they forget. And sometimes those who forget come back and tip you extra because they feel guilty. Other times it is people who go out to eat but can't afford to leave a tip. If you can't afford to leave a tip go through a drive-thru or eat at home.

I take it that you're a waitress. Well, I usually make it a point to tip 25% of the meal, which ends up being $3-5 at the very least per person. I find that it's suffice considering I'm a student, and the waitress should not be expecting more than that. You have to realize that you have a decent wage as it is and tips put you over the top considering the education level required to be a waitress (none). However, some people are just rude or are very cheap. Some people believe that why should you get a tip considering that it's your job and you get paid to do it. The same thing applies to Taxi drivers. Now ask yourself, why don't you tip the bus driver, lol.

There could be many reasons. Maybe they don't believe in tipping. Maybe the only have enough to cover the meal. It could be that what the waitress thinks is excellent service is not the same as what the customer thinks is excellent service.

If you are the waitress and it bothers you then I would risk asking a customer who doesn't leave you a tip why in a round about manner so you don't get into trouble. You could say something like, "Excuse me, was there anything I could have done better as your waitress? I would appreciate any suggestions." How can someone resist that if it's said with a smile?

As an aside, tips actually means To Insure Prompt Service.

They fail to realize a) that waitstaff gets paid a much lower minimum wage than everyone else in the world and b) that if you tip better, you tend to get better service in the future.

I always give appropriate tips; if I get stellar service, I give a stellar tip. If I get abysmal service, I give an abysmal tip. I still give a tip, because if I don't leave a tip at all, it might look like an accident and I want the waitperson to know that I am tipping based on service. I usually give really good tips.

Besides, the term tip is an acronym for "To Insure Proper Service"

I once got such bad service that I tipped $0.27. To prove she had an attitude problem, the waitress chased me down the street and threw the money into my car at me as I was getting in, and started yelling at me that I should feel honored that she even took my order. She was fired soon after.

First of all, they think its not essential. If they have paid for the restaraunt meal, how much they are willing to tip the waitress depends on the extra service they received. Personally, if I feel I am been looked after in my meal then I would generally offer a good tip. Vice-versa, I would pay little or even nothing if there was no service.

People are short on money and want to go out to eat but can't afford the tip after the cost of the meal and some are just rude. I always tip 20% if I have a good waiter or waitress.

I'm not sure why. I personally oppose the American restaurant system whereby the burden of paying staff is transferred from the ownership to the customers. Waitstaff should get a reasonable wage and only receive tips for extraordinary service, above and beyond the call of duty.

It just seems unfair that the price of the meal is 25% higher than advertised because you have to pay the staff and he tax.

Well, First off it depends on how much the waitress really does weigh and does this person that did give excellent service beyond the call of duty would want to be tipped and by how much?..

In some parts of the country, and the world, folks don't tip. Maybe they're outsiders. Anyone demonstrating an unfamiliarity with local custom is to be suspected. Homeland Security should have a hotline. Describe their appearance and vehicle if you can. Let them know there was something funny about these people. It's your duty as an American. God bless.

Because they shouldn't have ate out in the first place! If you don't have the money to leave a tip, they should eat at home!

I put a smiley face on my tickets sometimes lol. I always write " thank you! - Erin" Some times I write two !'s and put a smiley face. I haven't really noticed any better tips from the smiley faces though.

For many reasons:
1. They don't know restaurant etiquette
2. They don't know how hard it really is to take their order, bring the food, watch them eat, pick up their plates, bring them refills. They don't appreciate an of this.
3. They don't know why they should tip even though they not once had to get up to do anything and had someone else to do it for them.
4. They are assholes
5. They are asssholes
6. They will always be assholes.
