I have recently been diagnoised with bi polar. It takes so time to get the right medications for you. I have tried several different ones and am starting to finally balance out. Lithium is not the answer if you were just diagnosed. Lithium is a very strong medication and should be used as the last resort. You need to make sure that you are under the advice of a psycholigist or psychatrist and are in some type of therapy. You should be on some type of mood stabilizer and a antidepressant. Also your Drr may suggest some type of ADD medication to.
Then most important thing is to make sure you have a support system and keep your appointments and take your medication. It can be hard at times but you can do it with support. I have been able to function much better since we found the right combination of drugs for me. I take Lexapro and Trileptal Strattera. This combination works for me but like I said you need to find out what works for you.
One drug you may want to avoid is Paxil. I used it for long term anxiety and ended up trying to kill myself. This was before I was diaginosed with bi polar.
Good Luck

Being a pharmacy tech. I would discuss the matter with my Dr. Then, based on my personal history, medical & mental state. we would come up with a treatment plan - that may include a choice from a wide range of antidepressants & or therapy.
"Sometimes" it takes a lot of tweaking & changing of medications also in these cases. A lot of "depressions" / bi-polar disorders are caused by chemical imbalances in the body. Since each persons body is unique some medications work well with some & others need something different.
A small range of possable medications could be :
Paxil, wellbutrin, effexor, zoloft, prozac , lithium

I was diagnosed bi-polar 20 years ago. I take lithium and prozac. Three of each daily. I think the prozac is so I can survive the verbal abuse from my husband who doesn't "believe" in my diagnosis. See, he is all about MONEY, and I nearly bankrupted us (him as he believes it). So without my prozac, I guess I would be in Hell!! Hooray for lithium, altho sometimes I slack off for a while, and I don't know why! Would love to hear from anyone else who is in bi-polar Hell.

Lithium Carbonate there are others but this is the most effective treatment. This is a chemical imbalance in the brain not a mental/ emotional disorder or character flaw. The person has done nothing to cause this condition and did not bring it on him or herself. A person that I love dearly has this condition so I am well acquainted with it and what I have said is trustworthy. Google it. Be careful of those that would lay blame.

I'm sure the doctor who diagnosed you would prescibe the appropriate drug for you. You should trust a professional on that one- not a internet service. How will you know if the answer you get won't be a drug to kill you?

There are several drugs your doctor may use. Your doctor may prescribe a mood stabilizing drug and possibly combine that wit n an anti-depressant. Make sure you have an excellent doctor, and follow the regimen carefully.

I would agree with Crissy, and go with your Dr. My Mother has this disease, and a combination therapy really helped her. Now, 10 years after her diagnosis, she's on minimal meds and doing great!! Good luck!!
