I had read that India leads all countries in the percentage of babies born with birth defects. No real reason was given as to why.

Sadly, because of poverty, pollution, and the fact that much of the "first" world dumps their toxic garbage on poor countries like India. But India is one of the most wonderful places on earth.

As the news says, most citizens in India live in poverty. Mothers are malnourished and have no access to proper medical attention and care. It is also possible that they take abortion pills during pregnancy to rid of the baby. When induced abortion fails, babies are born with physical defects. Fetus is a very fragile item.

There was a gas leak in Bhopal in the 80's. That caused many women to later give birth to babies with birth defects. It could also be caused by women not having adequate access to good healthcare or nutrition.
