I leased a car today and the finance manager told me my credit score was 729. I read in Wikipedia that a score over 720 is considered good. Still, that sounds low compared to what I know my history is. I'd like to see a chart or graph showing credit scores for the US population.

I've been doing loans for over 5 years for mortgages, and have only seen a few 800s.They aren't that common.

A 729 is good.

Some things to take into consideration: if you have too much credit available (like credit cards you haven't or don't use or credit cards with too high of available credit) that could bring your score down - or too many inquiries on your report could lower your score (like if you've applied too many places and they've all ran a report). It isn't always about paying late or being in default.

I'd recommend, if you haven't already, that you order your free annual report at www.annualcreditreport.com and get reports from the top three credit reporting agencies. Take at a look at the comments and write letters to challenge anything that doesn't seem right to you. The agencies have to look into it or make a note that you're in disagreement.

Also, check out the following link for information about credit and loans:

850 is the highest you can receive. It depends on your high balances, timely payments, how many times your credit has been accessed, etc. 729 is a good credit score and you should be able to get lower interest financing.
